Trump tells governors feds 'will step in' if government disagrees with state reopening plans

President Trump told governors on a conference call Monday that he "will step in" if the federal government disagrees with state reopening plans, as he largely expressed satisfaction with how the governors are moving to lift coronavirus restrictions in their individual states, according to a report.

Trump, whose administration last month revealed guidelines for when states should begin lifting stay-at-home orders and other social distancing measures meant to slow the spread of the virus, has vocally pushed for the rapid reopening of the economy. The president said in an interview with Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo last week that his critics want the economy to remain shuttered until the November election, calling Democrats' reluctance to lift the coronavirus measures "a political thing."

"The governors are making their decisions, and want to make their decisions, and that's the way I want it to, and we will step in if we see something going wrong, or if we disagree, and some people say that's nice, and some people say I shouldn't be doing that, but we're going to do it if we see something wrong," Trump said to the governors Monday, according to audio of the call obtained by CBS.

Honoring their oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America” would be a nice start ... Cheers!

Trump should respect federalism — it’s in our Constitution. But the lockdown left shouldn’t be financed by the reopen right.

At his fingertips, DJT has the Interstate Commerce Clause...a favorite of the libs, which allowed them the screw up this country. Think of FDR.

Mark Levin explained this on his show several weeks ago.

They have NO right to stomp out all economic activity in their state, as it has a bearing on other state’s economic activity. And the Constitution states as much.

IF he insists and this goes to SCOTUS, they have two choices, either burn up their own ruling from 80 years ago, or let the people free. There is no other choice.

And I’ll pay money to watch the thing.

But the governors didn't stop all economic activity in their state. They limited it, which each state governor has the ability to do in the event of an emergency.

Which would include preserving, protecting, and defending the 10th Amendment as well, right?

He could start by opening the National Parks and Presidential Libraries.

There is a third option: to one by one rule that the State’s various constitutions themselves do not delegate such a power to them, as Texas’ Constitution offers it no power for a general shut down of businesses.

Is it a contradiction that lovers of general federal power in all circumstances whatsoever could apply the rule of enumerated powers to the States and not to the federal? Yes, but ultimately we should expect nothing else.

“No delegated power for this...”

There are powers delegated to the president to see that laws are enforced in the nation and to make sure laws are not violated in the nation.

Trump is the leader of a great nation. He knows that this COVID-19 is a terrible, virulent pathogen that will devastate and kill the susceptible. Those susceptible seem to be mostly people over 60 or those with underlying illness. For most others, infections do not result in death or debility. Yet he knows that the American people are frightened and in an attempt to isolate and limit disease most productive activity and social interactions have been severely restricted. He also knows that this economic and social destruction severely weakens the country and has a significant increase in death from these dislocations.

As President in a dire situation, the bully pulpit is very influential. Frightened people desperately seek authority and direction. Trump can do the following:

1) Assure the people that every effort is being made to seek and implement effective treatments and vaccines.
2) Tell anyone with antibodies to COVID-19 to resume their activities.
3) Suggest that healthy people under 55 who so wish may resume their prior activities.
4) If people have underlying medical conditions or are over 55, it is understandable that they may wish to remain in isolation and self quarantine until a safe effective vaccine or definitive effective treatment is available

However America must re-open and life must go on.

IMHO such a statement would be widely accepted and the Governors would eventually implement.

Federal laws, not state laws.

Stop and think. If you support Trump telling New York that they have to open then would also support a President Biden telling Texas they have to close?

The free states will be full speed in a few days. The blue states are getting the full dose of boss rule, which is a helpful lesson just 5 1/2 mos before election.

I’m just sick of having to wear a mask to work. Of course I consider myself lucky to have a job still. Many have lost theirs already.

Ditto that. I am required to wear one entering the building, and I never see a single person - all about control and stripping away individual responsibility and thought, it's like working for a union.

It all about lawyers bringing you company to court where it can be fleeced unscrupulously.

At present America’s worst enemies are tort lawyers salivating over the feast of unending covid 19 law suits.

It should be open season on lawyers. Defense lawyers also feed at the tort trough

“As I see it, the only recourse the Executive Branch of the U.S. government has is to have the DOJ support Federal lawsuits by individuals and business establishments against state governments over violations of constitutional rights.”

Same here.
