Two new studies are the latest in a series to show that a drug touted by U.S. President Donald Trump as a potential game changer against COVID-19 doesn't work.
Hydroxychloroquine reduces inflammation, pain and swelling, and is widely used to treat rheumatic diseases and malaria.
Laboratory tests of the drug against COVID-19 yielded promising results, but mounting evidence from clinical and observational studies suggest that it doesn't provide any meaningful benefits for COVID-19 patients.
In the first of the two new studies published May 14 in the BMJ, researchers in France assessed the effectiveness and safety of hydroxychloroquine compared with standard care in 181 adults hospitalized with pneumonia due to COVID-19 who needed oxygen.
Of those patients, 84 received hydroxychloroquine within 48 hours of admission and 97 did not. Treatment with the drug did not significantly reduce admission to intensive care or death within seven days, or the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome within 10 days.
The findings do not support the use of hydroxychloroquine in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia, said the team led by Matthieu Mahevas, from the department of internal medicine at Henri-Mondor Hospital, Assistance Publique-Hopitaux de Paris.
The second study, led by Qing Xie, from the department of infectious disease at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was conducted in China and included 150 adults hospitalized with mainly mild or moderate COVID-19. Half received hydroxychloroquine in addition to standard care and the others received standard care only.
Both groups had similar rates of COVID-19 recovery after 28 days, but those who received hydroxychloroquine experienced more adverse events.

The NYU study released May 12th says the Hydroxy with Zinc and Azithromycin does work so which study do we believe?
Too late with the treatment. It must be given at the first signs of the virus.
I wonder what about this is so hard for some medical people to understand. After the patient is sick enough to be admitted and probably need to be intubated (which is likely also wrong); it’s far too late.

Studies purposefully designed to fail by drug company toadies.
The most effective use of Hyrdrochloroguine is before the patient obtains pneumonia, and before the immune system has created a cytokine storm (the immune system running amok and doing more damage than helping). When either of those things has already occurred Hydroxychlorquine alone, or even additionally, will not be the first line of defense for the patient by then.
BUT, to help prevent the patient getting to the stage of having pneumonia, or worse, to even help prevent the need for hospitalization, Hydroxychloroquine with Zinc can work.
The true effectiveness of a drug is measured not just whenever in the course of an illness you chose. It is measured where during the illness the medicine is most effective.
For instance you would not measure the effectiveness of prednisone and like steroids on a flu or Wuhan Virus patient when the patient was not at a stage it was called for, even though such steroids can be extremely helpful at some stages.
Giving, and measuring the effectiveness of Hydroxychlorine very late in a Wuhan Virus illness is just as faulty as giving, and measuring the effectiveness of prednisone (steroids help calm a cytokine storm) at a stage of a Wuhan Virus illness when it is not yet called for - of course it would not register much difference in outcomes at that time in the illness in a study.
Those who survived thanks to Hydroxychloroquine treatment should now report to the nearest hospital for “late-term” abortion. Family of the deceased should then proceed to the offices of the New York Times to personally report the death as COVID and beg forgiveness for their kin for living anecdotally.
They may (must) also submit their unsealed ballot for the 2020 election while there.
That state rep lady (dem) wasn’t at first signs when she took it. She was getting quite bad, fearing death. She desperately asked her doctor to give it to her and credited it with saving her life.
I’ve also seen Dr. Steve ? on Ingraham Angle. He used it in patients when they were further along and said it was a game changer. He avoided intubating people and gave credit to the drug.
Something nefarious going on with this attack on hydroxy. I also understand it must be used with zinc.
Knowing a cure is available and NOT administering it is medical malpractice
There have been just as many reports that Hydroxy with Zinc and Azithromycin do work as there are rports that it don’t work...
The big difference is that most all the reports that it DOESN’T work are from liberal/democrat sources...
It use to take years to determine the effectiveness of a drug protocol. Now it only takes weeks or days?
It means that all studies are not equivalent...we would need many arms in a good study...lots of patients...start therapy at same time course...similar signs and symptoms...conventional treatment arm..az and hcq arm...hcq alone arm...az and hcq and zinc arm...hcq and zinc arm.
The target end points need to be the same...
It would take about 1 year or more to get the patients and the data. By that time cv19 is gone to its natural decay.
Well it sure wouldn’t hurt to try when they are further along in the illness.
