Gov. Gavin Newsom will propose a 10% pay cut for state workers on Thursday, according to two labor union leaders, part of his plan to fill a projected $54.3 billion budget deficit caused by the coronavirus-induced economic downturn.

Uh oh, that proposal is going to go over like a fart in church.
Signalling that CA might be running out of other peoples’ money. Their pension plan is the iceberg in the path of the ship.
Rather inconvenient that U-Haul is noting the great number of outbound rentals in the state.
I mean after all, WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER, shared sacrifice and all.
With state services in lockdown, people don’t have to wait in long lines at the DMV where offices are closed. Citizens can’t be penalized for not renewing drivers licenses or applying for new ones or transferring car licenses and registrations.
The states are losing millions in fees but the public can just flip the states the middle finger and drive with expired licenses and registrations.
Who misses the DMV chaos?
One thing people are forgetting is that it isn’t current state employee salaries that are bankrupting states. It is pensions of all the retired state employees that are bankrupting the states. Illinois alone pays over $14 billion to support a large group of people with $100,000+ plus pensions, and that is just a small part of the entire retired state pension budget. The reason the California governor is probably proposing this pay cut is because it’s easier for him to do, because retired pensions would be adjudicated by the courts. But this 10% pay cut will be a drop in the bucket. It won’t forestall bankruptcy.
I pray you are right. Even liberals have a boiling point. Maybe they’ll get some balls, finally wake up, and fight for their God given rights.

State pensions are protected by the Cal constitution The formula is subject to collective bargaining. Courts have supported union contracts and pensions when states have unilaterally tried to make changes.
I believe Gov Nuisance has the power to cut wages and initiate layoffs in emergencies. But not to cut pensions.
The taxpayers are completely left out of the loop, except, of course the bill paying part...

I would lay off all but the guys who fix the roads.
I suppose it hasn’t occurred to Newsome that getting his state back to work might mitigate some of those budget issues. My hope is the liberal governors who have killed their state’s economy hoping for a Pelosi bail out will pay a greater price at the polls in November. But Republicans should be prominent in educating the public that this pain did not have to occur.
Stupid Gov. Newsom, everybody knows that government workers are never supposed to feel the pain of the American people who toil under the whip and the gun to support them.
How about not just a pay cut but firing at least 50% of them?
Try taxing California state worker pensions 10% and putting this into the general budget and see what happens. Make that 25%.
Fire 50% of state workers. Reduce pensions 33%. Then get down to the serious cutting.
Another thing. Government workers never lose money. When California government workers have taken pay cuts in the past, the pay they missed is put into a bank that they can later cash out. If they hold that bank until they retire, it is a nice investment.
You should see what some professors in Kalifornia state kolleges are getting paid, and athletic coaches do even better. Many are in 6 or 7 figures.

Not that it matters much, but all this special unemployment money, as well as “regular” unemployment is fully taxable.
When I applied it asked me if I wanted 10% federal and 4% state withheld. Not being an idiot, I said yes.
Considering how stupid people are I guarantee there are going to be some surprised people come tax time.
