Personal Services Reopen In Colorado, With Barbers In High Demand To Fix ‘COVID-19 Haircuts.’ But Not All Plan To Return Right Away

Barber Steve Gomez was hunkered down at his home in Pueblo on Wednesday when he heard an unexpected knock. He was shocked to see one of his most loyal clients standing at his doorstep.

“He knocked on the door and says, ‘I was going up and down these streets. I knew you lived around here,’” Gomez said. The man said he was in need of a haircut and wanted to know if Gomez would be at Prestige Barbershop on Friday.

“I didn’t even know people had my phone number,” Gomez said.

He hasn’t been cutting hair since March 19, when COVID-19 forced the barbershop he works at to close. With parts of Colorado opening back up now, Gomez said his clients have called him this week wondering if they could make appointments.

“His phone and the house phone has not stopped ringing,” said Gomez’s wife, Peggy. “I don’t even know how in the hell they got the house phone number.”

On Thursday, Gomez said he was out on his front porch when a car drove by and someone yelled out the window, “Hey, Steve!” It was another client.

He’s even run into people while shopping for groceries.

“Another guy told me he had a COVID-19 haircut and he says, ‘You’re going to have to fix it.’” Gomez said. “I guess his wife or someone peeled him real good.”

Full disclosure: Gomez is my uncle. He’s worked as a barber in Pueblo for at least 50 years.

Now he’s booked solid through Tuesday, but it hasn't been an easy decision to go back to the shop today when the state allows it. He didn't want to book out further than Tuesday in case he doesn't feel comfortable or is forced to stop cutting hair again.

If this continues much longer, millions of blondes will dissappear.

OMG. Oh hell that would not be good, not at all. Without blondes who will make us stop and laugh so hard at what they say and do?

Fortunately I've been doing my own for years and always buy several kits when on sale. Enough for the rest of the year.

Daughter's hubby did hers...too funny...just highlights. She said he did good and gave him $15.

I used to have an inversion table that I’d use to stretch my back.
I also have cats.
Laying on an inversion table with long hair dangling is an invitation for kittuhs to come play.
Not recommended.

I had noticed over the years how such an overwhelming number of women were blondes as opposed to men and someone quietly explained to me I had been observing bottled creations largely all along lol.

Yesterday, California governor Gavin Newsom said that it would be “months” before he would allow barber shops, beuty shops, and manicurists to go back to work.

Shaggy and balding is no way for me to go through life.

Screw Newsom. I had my hair done Thursday by my hairdresser in a private home. One of the gals from the shop set up 3 stations in her home.....and they were all full. No masks required. Those gals are close to desperate now and just looking to get by. I was happy to help out.

Kudos to you! And the state won’t get the tax revenue that it would have gotten had the business been open.

Unless you are in the military or outside sales or in a bank, I see absolutely NO reason why you waste your time in a barber shop twice a month.

For most of my life I was blessed with my father's thick, luxurious hair, and it didn't matter how long it was. Those days are gone.

It's still pretty thick, but if I don't get it cut regularly, then Great Scott, I start to look like Doc Brown.

It’s genetic. My dad told me no one on his side is bald, and years later I confirmed it. My gramps had long silver hair and told me back then “you can easily get dates when you have long hair, you stand out.” I said “Really? OK.” That was it for me lol

My parents would not allow me to grow my hair long while I was in high school, and that was back when long hair was in style.

After I graduated, I grew my hair long, as well as growing two inches in height. All of a sudden I was getting a lot of attention from females. Even without any facial hair.
