Fear of the coronavirus is leading people with life-threatening emergencies, like a heart attack or stroke, to stay home when ordinarily they would have rushed to the emergency room, preliminary research suggests. Without prompt treatment, some patients, like Mr. Virachan, have suffered permanent damage or have died.
Emergency rooms have about half the normal number of patients, and heart and stroke units are nearly empty, according to doctors at many urban medical centers. Some medical experts fear more people are dying from untreated emergencies than from the coronavirus.
A recent paper by cardiologists at nine large medical centers estimated a 38 percent reduction since March 1 in the number patients with serious heart attacks coming in to have urgently needed procedures to open their arteries.
On a recent day at the Cleveland Clinic, there were only seven patients in the 24-bed coronary care unit. Usually the unit is full.
The inpatient stroke unit at Stanford University Medical Center in California usually has 12 to 15 patients, said its director, Dr. Gregory Albers. On one recent day in April, there were none at all, something that had never happened.
Back at the Cleveland Clinic, a man arrived with stroke symptoms on April 15. According to Dr. Thomas Waters, an emergency room physician, the man had waited two days to come in because he was afraid of the coronavirus. There was nothing doctors could do to prevent permanent brain damage.

My Wife appointment was converted to telemedicine. Her Dental appointment reschedule. My brother’s eye surgery was delayed a month until the State reopens.
I think it might have been a State Order base on the US Government recommendations.

I wonder how much leeway the medical establishments were given. It's tough to believe government bureaucrats believed they could fine tune something like that. I suppose we'll never really know.

That said a quick search on H1N1 and heart or influenza and heart will show you this is pretty common.
Most of them are not missing, they are on telemedicine.

Agreed - people are afraid of hospital and doctor’s waiting rooms with others there with sniffling noses and coughs. Waiting rooms are staging areas to catch a disease.
The last place I want to be right now is a hospital. I don’t understand the mystery here.
Maybe some of the MSM should be named as defendants if & when court cases arise from non-treatment of serious ailments because of hysteria surrounding the corona virus as regarding lack of care for heart attacks, strokes, cancers,etc.
I retired from Univ of Michigan Hospital last year. We got an email about laying off employees. We have 28K hospital employees. We have total of 50K employees with School included. In 2018 we had 2.4M clinic visits. Our inpt visits are down. ER visits down. We are expecting to lose 1 billion dollars in next year. Hiring freezes, wage increases will not be give this year. They are considering stopping the 10% contribution for pensions. No mention of other benefit changes like insurance and retiree premiums, vacation days, etc.
This is one of the largest hospitals in Michigan and it has been decimated.
Other hospitals are laying off like Henry Ford 2800 employees. Beaumont 2K.
I have no idea what lies ahead but it’s insane that we have decimated hospitals because of Detroit and Wayne areas. 3,500 deaths out of 9.9 million people in Michigan.
