Why does India, with over a billion people, have so few Covid-19 cases and deaths?

India is four times more populous than the US, but has just 2% the number of cases and only 1.5% of the number of Covid-19 deaths. How has the country, whose per capita income is just tenth of the US, avoided being flattened by the pandemic?

There are four possible explanations:

1. The epidemic may have struck later than in other countries. Since epidemics have exponential growth at the start, a small delay can have massive effects on the number of cases.

2. India’s 21-day lockdown may have successfully suppressed the epidemic. Physical distancing is one of the best ways to slow the epidemic and, if anything, many have criticized the lockdown for being too draconian in that regard.

3. India has not been able to test enough to count all cases and deaths. Without sufficient testing, many deaths may not be labeled with Covid-19 for official statistics, leading to an underestimation of the severity of the crisis.

4. India may have protective characteristics against Covid-19. Researchers have proposed that the low share of elderly in the population, the high temperatures and humidity in India, widespread BCG vaccination for tuberculosis, or resistance to malaria have helped India escape the brunt of the pandemic.

First, we can rule out that India is in an early stage of the pandemic. The first infected travelers from Wuhan reached Kerala, southwest India, on January 29. While it is true that Kerala acted quickly and contained a potential outbreak, more carriers reached other states by early March.

Hydroxychloroquine is plentiful and they know it works there. It’s worked forever on malaria

This item got less than half a sentence, and no explnation:

"... or domestic hydroxychloroquine use to combat malaria."

India happens to be the #1 HCQ manufacturer in the world. All the clinics have it in ample quantities, because they always have it in stock for malaria; all the doctors are very familiar with its uses and it safety characteristics, and its cost is pennies per dose.

So maybe... just maybe...

The hospitals and doctors are probably not getting extra dollar$ for each one that dies with covid and those that use ventilators.

The wicked rule us now it seems.

Maybe they are doing an excellent job of targeting potential hot spots and then using the malaria drug prophylactically? I have no idea why?

There actually were a few corona viruses knocking around the world before COVID-19 showed up. They may have some sort of partial immunity.

It used to be jokingly said that in India if you made it past the age of 10 nothing would kill you. I doubt the statistics can back that up but perhaps it wasn’t as big a joke as some people might have thought.

have you noticed any changes using it?

Not really but I eat very a very healthy keto style diet. I also don't drink alcohol, smoke, or do recreational drugs. I also get a fair amount of exercise and have lost about 35 lbs from the highest weight I was a couple of years ago.

It's like trying to prove a negative in my case.

I worked for one of the integrators
and had the “pleasure” of going to
Calcutta, one of the dirtiest areas if
not the dirtiest. Being the epicenter of
Indian Communism did them no favors

Vaccinated like a pincushion
before and loaded up with a daily
dose of what I think was HCQ to fight
potential malaria
I took before and after - never got ill
Maybe this is why they’re not dying
in droves there

The second I got there I wanted
to go back but I was ensconced in
the bubble of the Hyatt
with very good Western food,
(Don’t care for Indian cuisine)

It’s important never to
ingest water when bathing and everyone
over a certain status drinks bottled
sanitized water (from a bottler like Coke
Dasani/Aquafina) or clean Himalayan water
from Tata etc.

As a stopover/transfer I was in the Delhi airport
which had the most opulent duty free
offerings - im not a world traveler but
the $ passing through seemed palpable

And because India has much bigger problems. Like the fact that a million people per year die of diarrhea.

Do you have a source for that? That would be about a billion doses a day. That’s a lot of pills.

They don’t take it every day.. After a while a assume your body builds this stuff up in your body.. Then when this virus came along the stuff in our body gave you immunity!
