Our three family businesses with 100 employees in total each received the loans since we are completely shut down by DC and VA government mandates. My sons (who run the businesses day to day) and I were relieved to get the funds - not the least of which is because we each pledged our homes and if the businesses go bankrupt we are on the hook ... at any rate, we face the same quandary as Ms. Black-Lewis in this article. Doubtless, many others face it as well. We have until tomorrow afternoon to take a decision for Friday payroll. We would appreciate any sage advice and comments from fellow Freepers ... but pass this story along as input into the ongoing challenge of the economic downturn.

The anger came from employees whod determined theyd make more money by collecting unemployment benefits than their normal paychecks. Sometimes I think this country deserves what is coming to it.
I'm just sorry my kids have to live with it.

She needs to send out certified letters notifying employees. If they refuse to return they should lose their unemployment benefits. If she cant get them back she should either return the money or contact SBA to find out what other coarse she should take. I believe it turns into a loan if its not used for payroll.

Does anyone know if temporary employees are included in people who cannot be laid off?
To: BurgessKoch
In addition to family members on payroll, Hire other people like independent contractors and put them on payroll to do jobs that you always wanted to do. Upgrade computers, paint walls, start marketing and sales programs, business consultants, financial planners, inventors. Think outside the box. It’s a gift, if you can’t use it for employees use it for something else. Once that is done, hire best back at higher pay.

Hilarious. Honestly, my advice to most business owners has been to consider very carefully what benefit they will receive from taking out a loan to pay people not to work. Sure, it's supposed to be forgivable, but we don't know what that "forgiveness" process will look like, and there's a chance you'll be stuck paying back the government for the privilege of doling out money to employees you don't need. Honestly, it makes more sense for a lot of businesses to just furlough or lay off the workers they don't need.

Did ya ever get the feeling they are just getting rid of our currency for something else ?
It all doesn’t make sense. Everyone knows that they are firesaling our dollars. Just give it away.
Like it’s not worth anything. We are positioning for a global conflict with Russia and China and if we don’t liquidate and buy durable products then we won’t be ready for WWIII.

I worked on 4 loans.
The rip off was the private school that lost no revenue, paid the teachers to continue teaching online, and got almost $500,000. They got a windfall.

Psst, Jaimie, hire you family. Do what the feds do, pay them for no show jobs.

Let those go who wish to go. Hire new heads even though there’ll be no work for awhile, so the head count stays the same. Their good fortune and your loyalty account. No one who bailed comes back.

I’m sure you will pray and decide what is the right thing to do,,that’s what matters in the light of eternity.
It’s a difficult position for all concerned. You view it from your practical business point of view; and at the same time your employees are extremely happy to see their weekly incomes increase with the unemployment extra benefits, even if it’s only for a few months. Both views are understandable.
