The UK will have to live with some disruptive social measures for at least the rest of the year, the government's chief medical adviser has said.
Prof Chris Whitty said it was "wholly unrealistic" to expect life would suddenly return to normal soon.
He said "in the long run" the ideal way out would be via a "highly effective vaccine" or drugs to treat the disease.
But he warned that the chance of having those within the next calendar year was "incredibly small".
"This disease is not going to be eradicated, it is not going to disappear," he said, at the government's daily coronavirus briefing.
"So we have to accept that we are working with a disease that we are going to be with globally... for the foreseeable future."

We’ll develop some immunities to this, and it will continue to mutate in the wild.

Nope. My son went through all the complications of that a few years ago. It creates the cytokine storm. A few hundred days in the hospital. Countless outpatient trips to the clinic. Therapy. Rehab hospital etc.

I was in septic shock with multiple organ failure 5 1/2 years ago, on ventilator 16 days, expected to die ---- but even that doesn't sound as bad as what your son went through.
Yow. How did he come in contact with the 1918-19 flu? I thought that had subsided on its own 100 years ago. (I am very ignorant about such stuff.)

I’m keeping my fingers crossed my family can still go to the UK in July. We have family over there our daughter has never met and we are hoping and praying we will still be able to go.
Amazing it took us a century to lose our common sense.
Most people’s masks don’t even filter enough to protect the wearer.
Next we will need blinders too.
