A new study argues that city subways and buses were a “major disseminator” of the coronavirus in the Big Apple.
The paper, by MIT economics professor and physician Jeffrey Harris, points to a parallel between high ridership “and the rapid, exponential surge in infections” in the first two weeks of March — when the subways were still packed with up to 5 million riders per day — as well as between turnstile entries and virus hotspots.
“New York City’s multitentacled subway system was a major disseminator — if not the principal transmission vehicle — of coronavirus infection during the initial takeoff of the massive epidemic,” argues Harris, who works as a physician in Massachusetts.
While the study concedes that the data “cannot by itself answer question of causation,” Harris says the conditions of a typical subway car or bus match up with the current understanding of how the virus spreads.

In NYC, people get off the subway then rush to get on a crowded elevator. Bad place to live and work right now.
NYC most of all. Plus with large legal and illegal populations from China and travelers and visitors to and from Europe.
Gonna be hard to control subway ridership and transmission with a “reopening”.
And don’t care about social distancing. NYC was slow and is slow to flatten the curve. And Northern NY state pays the price for it
Nothing new. Tests were done in the 1960s by the US Army to see how fast a bacteria could spread on the subways.

I saw an old clip of Reagan on Johnny Carson when he was still governor. Reagan was talking about some of the waste in Washington.
“So they did this study. They interviewed all sorts of people and took polls - a year long. To see what makes people feel happy. After all of this study they discovered that people that have more money are happier than those that don’t. And, younger people are generally happier than older people. And health was a big factor - healthier people were happier than sick people.”
“So they spent over $250,000 [1974 dollars] to be able to tell us that young rich healthy people are happier than old sick poor people!”
The New York subway system is a disgusting thing to ride on.The whole system needs a total flush with high strength chlorine bleach.
It doesn’t help when you have derilects camping out in the tunnels.The system is filthy.

I don’t believe it takes a person with a MIT PILED HIGH AND DEEPER degree to come to the same conclusion at subways and inner city buses are only fit for those people who have a death wish.
"Getting outside" means something different in New York during rush hour or New Orleans during Mardi Gras than it means in other parts of the country. The subways definitely played a part in spreading the disease in New York, but I wouldn't rule out people catching it on the street.
Once again, I’m glad I live in my “sprawling, car-dependent” suburb. I’ll be interested to see how the “new urbanists” try to spin this one.
