New York City added nearly 4,000 people who never tested positive for the coronavirus to its death toll Tuesday, bringing coronavirus-related deaths in the city to around 10,000 people.
The city decided to add 3,700 people to its death tolls, who they “presumed” to have died from the virus, according to a report from The New York Times. The additions increased the death toll in the U.S. by 17%, according to the Times report, and included people who were suffering from symptoms of the virus, such as intense coughing and a fever.
The report stated that Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio decided over the weekend to change the way the city is counting deaths.
“In the heat of battle, our primary focus has been on saving lives,” de Blasio press secretary Freddi Goldstein told the Times.“As soon as the issue was raised, the mayor immediately moved to release the data.”
The Times report added that health officials have had difficulty counting the exact number of deaths, because of the demographics who have been hit the hardest by the virus.
“Public health officials say that counting the dead from a pandemic disease like Covid-19 presents difficulties because many of those who die are older or suffering from other serious health conditions,” they wrote. “And the full effects of the outbreak on mortality in New York City, and around the country, could take many more months to study and understand.”
New York City is not the only city in the U.S. to include presumptive coronavirus deaths in their total. Several health departments in Ohio announced last week that they were going to begin including people who they “suspected” of having the virus.

On Fox Businesss Stuart Varney program this morning there was a discussion about the economic impact of the shutdown on the economy. There was a general consensus that if the shutdown continues past May 1 the economy will be in a severe depression from which recovery will be very lengthy.
We’re a clearly using a different standard to determine the deaths
As for DiBlasio’s standards, I have no doubt that out of the hundreds daily there could be dozens each day which were ambiguous and which were treated in a manner one might treat COVID patients, who are marked off as being treated for COVID.
That said, on one hand, the numbers are limited where that is plausible, and on the other, there has never been a requirement for cause of death to be determined by PCR test where a doctor or ME has diagnosed the cause of death, such as from the flu.
If all of these ‘extra’ deaths in NYC are not from COVID, then they are from something else that you’d have to explain. Again, the typical average 150 deaths per day becoming 600+ isn’t just a paperwork shuffling issue.
We're gonna need a bigger island.
Juice the numbers, by the pimp deblasio, so that it looks worse than reality.
Reichsführer Wilhelm is playing “General Westmoreland” with the body counts.
I read recently that hospitals get $39,000 from the Federal government for each COVID-19 patient.
Based upon what treatments were provided.
Not just because they walked in the door. It’s a payment schedule.
No one is being put on a ventilator because they’ve got a bladder infection, or an amputated leg, and thus the hospital can’t be reimbursed for that treatment without outright falsifying records. For that assertion, you’d need some evidence rather than hand-waving hysteria.
So? You have a massive herd of horses rampaging through your town, you don't worry about whether or not there are a few Zebra's in the mix. Most of the deaths are going to be caused by the Virus, especially if they exhibit some of the symptoms. In an outbreak it's ridiculous to think you need to test everybody dying.
Just look at the death rate now versus the previous years.
Juice the numbers, by the pimp deblasio, so that it looks worse than reality.
Though that would look essentially the same in regards response, and reasoned analysis.
Three or four. All the rest are actual virus cases. Why are you worrying about minor errors in the count?
Bull $hit!
Look at all the empty hospitals.
They are jacking the numbers in order to justify the B.S.
“Tens of thousands of NHS hospital beds remain unoccupied amid the coronavirus crisis about four times the normal number due to huge ongoing efforts to free up space, and a slowdown in admissions from other causes, reports HSJ.
Figures from the national NHS operational dashboard, seen by HSJ, show that 40.9 per cent of NHS general acute beds were unoccupied as of the weekend 37,500 of the total 91,600 relevant beds recorded in the data. That is 4,500 more than the 33,000 the NHS said had been freed up on 27 March, and nearly four times the normal amount of free acute beds at this time of year.
I see you are a voice of sanity here. Good effort. Hope it works.
Sure, the virus is likely more deadly than seasonal flu. But, millions in this nation were never going to die. This is not the equivalent of the Spanish flu. But, it has been peddled that way to American people and the world and that is making re-opening the nation more difficult and there will be consequences for that.
I ask you to do this. Find out what the normal daily death rate is in New York. (I've read it's around 150.) Find out what the current death rate is in New York. (I believe it's around 600-800).
Explain why the Normal death rate is so much higher now.
The only deaths anymore are from the Wuhan Virus. Apparently it cures cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and auto accidents.
I agree that the numbers have been inflated, but I very much doubt they are greatly inflated. I think there is some minor inflation going on, and people are trying to claim this proves the whole thing is a hoax because of some relatively minor inflation of the numbers.
Sure, the virus is likely more deadly than seasonal flu. But, millions in this nation were never going to die.
And how would anyone know this until more information came in? This is a new "novel" corona virus, and nobody knew how infectious and how deadly this thing was. If you have been keeping up with the goings-on in China, you get the impression that this thing is astonishingly infectious and very deadly.
Now that we are getting more reliable numbers, we can make better decisions on what to do about it. I think the evidence is coming in that it is less deadly to healthy young people, even though it is killing some of them, like that 24 year old sailor on the Theodore Roosevelt.
I think we can start opening up restaurants and other businesses, but we should continue to take precautions to minimize the spread of this incredibly infectious disease.
So you are saying that New York just had a sudden increase of up to 400 cases per day of cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and auto accidents?
Why would all this stuff go up by 400 deaths per day just when the virus happens to be working it's way through the population?
It’s my understanding that the govt pays the states for every death ascribed to the virus. If so, fer Crissakes, why wasn’t there some kind of validity check? (rhetorical)
Your argument is not conclusive. I would also need to see an all-deaths-per-day number for NYC.
The obvious reason that stay at home deaths are up is because people are afraid to go to hospitals because of COVID.
I live in such an area. Almost nobody except COVID patients are going to the hospital. EVERYBODY else is afraid.
My previous post should have been directed to FewsOrange.
