NYC Adds Nearly 4,000 People Who Never Tested Positive To Coronavirus Death Tolls

New York City added nearly 4,000 people who never tested positive for the coronavirus to its death toll Tuesday, bringing coronavirus-related deaths in the city to around 10,000 people.

The city decided to add 3,700 people to its death tolls, who they “presumed” to have died from the virus, according to a report from The New York Times. The additions increased the death toll in the U.S. by 17%, according to the Times report, and included people who were suffering from symptoms of the virus, such as intense coughing and a fever.

The report stated that Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio decided over the weekend to change the way the city is counting deaths.

“In the heat of battle, our primary focus has been on saving lives,” de Blasio press secretary Freddi Goldstein told the Times.“As soon as the issue was raised, the mayor immediately moved to release the data.”

The Times report added that health officials have had difficulty counting the exact number of deaths, because of the demographics who have been hit the hardest by the virus.

“Public health officials say that counting the dead from a pandemic disease like Covid-19 presents difficulties because many of those who die are older or suffering from other serious health conditions,” they wrote. “And the full effects of the outbreak on mortality in New York City, and around the country, could take many more months to study and understand.”

New York City is not the only city in the U.S. to include presumptive coronavirus deaths in their total. Several health departments in Ohio announced last week that they were going to begin including people who they “suspected” of having the virus.

Oh yeah no doubt. I think President Trump has to start the economy this week or next. May 1st is too late.

If you think about the unemployment numbers. 17 million so far and it will rising.

The St Louis Fed is estimating 47 million by the end of June. https://www.forbes.com/sites/sarahhansen/2020/03/30/coronavirus-could-lead-to-47-million-lost-jobs-says-st-louis-fed/#6501e72066fa

We will be paying for this in various ways for decades to come.

I think President Trump is making a colossal mistake trusting the Swamp.

There is abut 50 billion dollars up for grabs in the next round of stimulus, to hospitals who treated COVID-19 uninsured. This means there is an opportunity for hospitals to clean their slates of money lost treating the indigent in the past. I hate even typing it, but I bet that’s what will happen. Every uninsured person who was recently treated for whatever reason and then died, just became an asset instead of a burden on the healthcare system’s bottom line if the cause of death is COVID-19 related.

Disgusting people.

Everyone has been ordered to stay home — where else are they going to die? Deaths in department stores and restaurants, etc., must have been zero.

Usually there are around 25 at home deaths per day in NYC.
Recently there have been about 200 per day.

Enlightened1 seems to think we should be using different, higher, standards for determining cause of death for COVID than for anything else. Based upon other threads he also thinks that there are over half a million folks who die each year in NYC.

I wonder how many car accident deaths and suicides are now officially COVID-19?

None. These are folks with COVID symptoms that the local medical professionals have determined as probable/likely to have died from COVID but were not tested. We’ve already determined that not only can you not read English with comprehension...but we can’t make you read.

Again, your point doesn’t work unless you also argue that NYC is dragging hundreds of people off the streets every day to kill them as the numbers don’t support your claim even if EVERYONE who normally would die were to be misclassified.

We're a clearly using a different standard to determine the deaths and relying on socialists like DeBlasio to oversee a proper count.

Trusting all these presumed deaths to be accurate is like trusting the Chinese government to tell the truth.

DeBlasio is the new General Westmoreland. It's all about the Body Count.

Why not count all the deaths in NY City this year as Corona Chinese Italian Covid-19 flu deaths? That works even better.

On average, around 150 people die a day in NYC from all causes. For the past two weeks (Mar 31-Apr 14) the average daily death rate attributed to COVID is just short of 500/day, without including any of the additional described in this article. Even if ALL of the non-COVID deaths had been misclassified, it would not be enough to change the argument.

I guess they weren’t padding them enough using CDC guidelines, “If you THINK the coronavirus MIGHT have been a contributing factor...”

That’s not remotely what the CDC guidelines say. It’s a paraphrase by folks that fail basic reading comprehension in English. There have though been many articles misquoting the guidelines - which are the same standard as has been used for other diseases such as the flu for decades.

I read recently that hospitals get $39,000 from the Federal government for each COVID-19 patient.

Padding the death count significantly will definitely raise the chorus of those who want to keep the economy shutdown indefinitely.

About 25-30% of the national death toll is in NYC alone. The amount of figure padding possible there is lost in the surge of deaths.
