Give me liberty or give me a mild fever
American Thinking ^ | April 12, 2020 | James Arlandson

We will remember this time as the Great Media-Driven Panphobia of 2020.

...

So just how deadly is the virus? Though comparisons are looked down on because analogies have to be exact, we can still learn from another fever that swept through the land. The Centers for Disease Control on the swine flu of 2009 in the USA (emphasis added):

During the pandemic, CDC provided estimates of the numbers of 2009 H1N1 cases, hospitalizations and deaths on seven different occasions. Final estimates were published in 2011. These final estimates were that from April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010 approximately 60.8 million cases (range: 43.3-89.3 million), 274,304 hospitalizations (195,086-402,719), and 12,469 deaths (8868-18,306) occurred in the United States due to pH1N1.

Did they also push their elderly parents out to the front lines?

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. God Himself is not secure, having given man dominion over His works! Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold. Faith alone defends. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undetectable.”
H. Keller

Or as my Doctor said on a recent checkup, wash your hands, stay out of crowds and avoid hospitals.
Most of us will be infected.

Most of the fatalities had serious pre-existing conditions.
Yes, there are a few young and healthy victims; not many.

No, but would you drive your car if the risk of death of each drive in the car was slightly less than one percent?
*******************************************************
First, we don’t know what the % is going to come in at.
Second, I have the choice to decide if I want to subject myself to that risk. I don’t have the government determining what’s a safe standard for me to drive. Your analogy wasn’t very well thought out.
“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” Ben Franklin

“I don’t have the government determining what’s a safe standard for me to drive.”

The government determines how that car is built, how that car is designed, how it is sold, the fuel you must use, how it can be driven. The government is in the driver seat as much as you.

How about all the people who jumped on disease ridden boats to escape religious persecution, to come to an unsettled land, knowing close to half would not survive? Where would America be if they had all accepted the heavy hand of the crown because the alternative was too scary?

I am not picking a side but this has divided Free Republic. We can’t be divided but the left has found a way to kill the country and divide our side.

Here in NJ this is killing a lot of older people (some younger, mostly older); the idea is not to cower in fear/take precautions to save yourself, but to avoid killing older people with less sturdy constitutions.

Hard to attack that motive.

A dialog that never happened:

Jefferson: “... it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
Madison: But if we revolt against the Crown, people will die!
Washington: I’m willing to risk my life for liberty!
Adams: Fine for you to say, but you’re putting other people’s lives at risk! Shame on you!
Franklin: The man has a point...
All: God save the King!

Everywhere in nature the old and the sick are sacrificed for the benefit of the herd. Here, we are killing the herd to save those who will die during the next flu season anyway.

Tranferring risk to others is easy. Democrats like Bob Rubin do it all the time.

A society should be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable. We’ve already failed our unborn.

"this has divided Free Republic"

CV mandates are nothing more than re-purposing the classic Marx slogan "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs."

All that has occurred is that the traditional, implied meaning of economic wants has been substituted for perceived social good. In other words, the young(er), healthy, productive able are now expected to defer to the (assumed) health requirements of elderly/co-morbid.

It's a nice trick, and like Catch-22, there certainly should be an underlying sense of awe about how all encompassing such a paradox trap presents. I mean, I for one really admire the beauty of such a nice rhetorical twist. However, all arguments have inherent weaknesses, with the CV shaming program no different. Anyone curious what it is?

Global warming, the green new deal and other broad societal engineering efforts all base their core strategic efforts on shaming. Its basic programming principles are to train people to think that they are socially obligated reach for a greater good (defined by whom?), therefore they should sacrifice their own wants, needs & desires for the group as a whole.

At this point, people should be then wondering, how is the position then allowed @ FR? And that is a very good question, because this type advocacy for CV power & control certainly isn't allowed @ T_D.win, et al. Nor is advocacy for any green new deal nor global warming; so why the exception for CV?

You are so right - this Marx. And the Marxists know that even if this attempt to use CV to take over fails, societal health “emergencies” will be used to further their agenda for years to come.

"A society should be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable."

I would add:

- "Taxes are the price of civilization."
- "It takes a village to raise a child."
- "Industrial civilization is fundamentally unsustainable and should be dismantled in order to secure a livable future for all species on the planet."

I have to admit I enjoy reading your CV advocacy. Ultimately, it's a challenge to infer your true intent, which is usually a good indicator of brilliance.

As Poe noted "Without a clear indicator of the author's intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views so obviously exaggerated that it cannot be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the views being parodied."
