As to motivation, it's always been about power & control; the ability to dictate: "From each according to ability, to each according to need". Most infer this slogan as pertaining to economic means. However, the enemies of freedom (temporarily) got clever and shifted targets to include social obligations.
The result is that the most healthy, physically able - literally the backbone of this country - are shamed into submission for the "greater good" of those completely dependent on their productivity. That is, the elderly on SS, and the obese, diabetic ghettopopotami, both of whom wouldn't even exist in the first place without an underlying economy to support them.
Doomers. This was their Big One, the event they’ve been waiting for since childhood. This was IT, the extinction of Mankind, TEOTWAWKI. It would validate their sick worldview that Mankind was evil, but they alone possessed True Knowledge. They would emerge from their bunkers, munching freeze-dried rations, and then survey the ruins.
Pscho paranoids, the lot of them. They hate everyone and Mankind in general. The prospect of people suffering brings them to orgasm.

A couple of things to take into account:
1) California was one of the first states hit by the coronavirus therefore it makes sense that we would reach our peak before, say, West Virginia.
2) We were the first state to lock down (March 19). We have had curve flattening measures longer therefore our cases are not growing as quickly as other states.
Death rate in Italy today is 12.78%. Down slightly from prior 13%. They never instituted measures until it was way too late.

You think that this virus is so harmful to human health and so deadly that the damage being done to our economy and to our societal systems by the lengthening national lockdown is justified. Conversely, I do not agree that the lockdown, which without doubt has had a positive effect on reducing the spread of the virus, is causing far too much damage to our country and that it must end or at least be relaxed very soon.
One of us is right, and the other is wrong; that is, we both cannot be correct in our assessment.
My question: Do you hope that you're wrong?
The death numbers aren’t reliable, just like the US. A bounty is being paid to hospitals for COVID-19 deaths.

I am in Mass. Nothing is stopping me. The cops aren’t even stopping crime. I could knock over the local liquor store and get away with it.
I can go visit whomever I wish, go to the grocery store. Go shoot a gun in the woods. Go for a walk, go for a hike, go have dinner with a friend.
Nothing I normally do is excluded with the exception of going out to eat, and going to the movies.
I am retired, but I do some writing from home. My wife works from home.
So, go out and have a ball. Congregate, go to church, go to the bars you all obviously frequent, go sit outside in the park with the same fools you sat at the diner with. No one cares. And no one is going to stop you.
No one else every writes what they do for work, but in about 90% of the cases you can continue to work.
Many of you think you got this last summer (based on your absurd posts) so who cares if you go out.
Go to church tomorrow. Hug people. Shake hands. Have the family over for dinner.
It won’t bother me one bit.
But...the trade off is in three weeks you have to die at home. You are so certain you are immune, you get to run out any disease you get at home. No doctors, no Trump cure. You can lay in bed and listen to Rush tell you how the economy is in ruin. Until you are better.
That is the deal you are all suggesting. And I am all for it.
OK, so let’s look at the FACTS. In Italy, where there were no protective measures taken, the death rate has reached 13%.
In the U.S. we have 328 million people. Applying the math, if we had done nothing to respond, we would be looking at the deaths of 42 million people by the end of the pandemic, assuming it would infect everyone sooner or later. Add on to that the many more millions of people who even if they don’t die, are sick for several weeks, or may get complications that result in permanent health problems (permanent damage to lungs, heart and renal function are all being reported). Don’t you think that would be far more devastating than what we are doing?

There are lots of things in life that are dangerous. We could even die in our homes.
Life is full of risks. Trying to avoid all of them will kill you. It is impossible to avoid risk. It can be lessened, but it comes at a cost. There are things to lower the risk, but it will not completely avoid it.
People in New York City live packed together in subways and high rise termite hives. Californians self-isolate in their cars.
