The number we have been needing is one that is not subject to fudging or finagling. During the Spanish Flu in 1918 they used a calculation called excess deaths to determine what number of deaths could be laid directly at the feet of the disease. No assumptions, no hair-splitting, just simple arithmetic. (This is my first post ever. Please be nice. Thanks.)

Flu deaths have to be way down plus people are probably looking after themselves better. Plus less driving (traffic fatalities).

When everyone hides under their desk, fewer people die. Go figure.

Watch President Fauci take credit for it, or at least brag about it. You know it’s coming.

fewer barfights and murders?

Yeah if we want to reduce the death rate lets just everyone stay at home. That might work for a while. I suspect domestic abuse would increase though.

Congratulations on an excellent first post, FRiend Aloysius.

I was asking myself the exact same question the other day: “How many have died in excess of what could be considered normal for this time of year?” This won’t tell us everything about the severity of the pandemic, but it’s a bit of data that will add some useful context.

All I can say it’s about darn time that some of our “experts” and newscreatures start asking what really should be an obvious question.

I worked in the newspaper biz for 25 years as reporter and editor, and I can tell you that journalistic standards on the Podunk Gazette were higher than what we see today in the Washington press corps.

The bottom line? There is a tradeoff between economic activity and mortality that's widely accepted.

BOOM.

The headline says March 2020 but the data is only through March 21 and the total number of covid deaths through March 21st was 302. The big increase has been since then.

If the government forces people to stay in house arrest, it saves lives.

Slavery saves lives, and anyone who opposes it has “blood on their hands.”

Besides fewer accidents, am betting fewer flu deaths. Wish they would put those stats alongside the CV stats.

During “social distancing” (quarantine), everything is going down.

To include murder, accidents etc. Surgeries gone wrong. Any number of other death causes.

I contend total deaths is not a good measure for this plague under these circumstances.

No one's driving, so very few automotive deaths. Similarly, no planes crashing, no bus accidents, no trains, etc.

No social interaction, so no hostile confrontations resulting in someone getting killed.

Criminals who might normally blend into the crowd no longer have crowds to blend into.

You might want to read what you posted:

Now after deaths for the entire month of March are reported, the results show that deaths in the US this March are 15% less than the average of the past four years!

There were 15% less deaths in March, this year versus the previous 4 years.

So is the CV saving lives?

Nobody driving. Not too many work related injuries. Not a lot of people drowning, dropping dead while exercising, biking, sport related deaths...

You just can’t have too much go wrong if all you do is loaf about the house.

I looked and found that the taking clause is dead along with due process. And freedom to, well, have freedom. And freedom of assembly and that freedom to worship stuff. All dead...
