March 23: Morgantown, West Virginia Mylan Plant to Restart Production of Anti-Malaria Drug Hydroxychloroquine for Coronavirus Treatment

The Mylan plant in Morgantown, West Virginia will restart production of hydroxychloroquine this week. The drug was touted by researchers, doctors and President Trump in the treatment of the COVID-19 virus.

Generic Drug Company Teva in Israel is also mass-producing the drug to save lives.

Many of the drugs will come from a plant in Morgantown W. Va., in case any are worried about Chinese sourcing. — Stephen Smoot (@S_A_Smoot) March 22, 2020

The Dominion Post reported:

Mylan’s Morgantown plant is restarting production of an anti-malaria medication that is under study as a potential treatment for the COVID-19 virus.

The drug is hydroxychloroquine sulfate; the tablets are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of malaria, lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.

President Trump on Thursday touted its cousin, chloroquine, as a potential treatment and mistakenly said it has been FDA approved for COVID-19.

Mylan clarified, “Although the product is not currently approved for use in the treatment of COVID-19, it is listed by the World Health Organization as a drug under investigation for efficacy against the coronavirus.”

The drug had been in short supply earlier in March, according to news reports, but Mylan and another generic drug firm, Israel-based Teva, are both ramping up production.

Good find.

I haunt FR and even though the story is from the 23rd of last month this is the first time I’ve read it on FR.

May have been posted but I didn’t see it.

The delay in starting production is inexcusable, as you point out.

If this drug is as effective as preliminary (repeat preliminary) applications suggest, the immediate need will be for a billion pills which will be consumed in a matter of a couple of weeks!

Physicians would save more lives if they have free access to hydroxychloroquine than if they had 1000 ventilators and the staff to run them. Governor Cuomo has denied access to hydroxychloroquine to sick New Yorkers. Wonder if his New York resident brother Chris of CNN, diagnosed with COVID-19 somehow ,someway got hydroxychloroquine and is being treated. If you don’t get it before you go into respiratory distress or have to wait 3-5 days for a “confirmatory” positive test, it is not as effective or it fails.

Yes. I am curious as to the number of doses produced and where they are going.

Some items bear repeating, especially as the governor of Nevada appears to be hoarding HCQ while attempting to block citizens from receiving it. This article is here on FR.

I am hearing rumours of New Yorkers unable to receive prescriptions and one report of an Ohioan who does not believe his pharmacist is allowed to fill it.

In addition, the governor of Michigan seems to be unable to decide if her executive order regarding HCQ stands or not.

Do we assume, then, that the company has started production? If so what is the rate per week?

A mid-April target was set by Mylan to begin supplying the product. It hopes to provide 50 million tablets to treat more than 1.5 million people.

20 pills per person runs up the total quick. If it's 20 pills per person and 100 million from 320 million need the pills medicinally and prophylactically, that amount is reached. That is only a domestic need.

"The delay in starting production is inexcusable, as you point out."

It takes TIME to restart a shuttered chemical plant (which these are). Hell, even shutting down for maintenance and restarting an existing operational plant takes one to two weeks. A mid-April shipping product prediction means they did it in three weeks, which is amazing.

“The delay in starting production is inexcusable”

Inexcusable ? Agreed.

Explainable? Every local Pol needs their picture taken in front of the shuttered plant.
Local Pols have to have “critical planning” meetings, with proper press coverage catching those table banging This Is An Emergency!photos.
Diversity hiring quotas establishef.

Oh, dont forget gotta wait for those VIG checks to clear

Yes.

Plus EMTs, Firemen, Law Enforcement, Nurses, ARMED FORCES, Nursing Assistants, Truck Drivers, Grocery Stockers, Security guards, Veterinarians and their assistants. Elder Care personnel and maintenance technicians. Automotive Mechanics.

All of these personnel need to be pre treated immediately. Assuming the supply is being manufactured at this time, it is crucial to get the doses out to them. In addition, if Israel is manufacturing and sending to us as well, these must get to the persons who support our infrastructure as soon as possible.

The information must get out. It may be time to contact one’s mayor, congressman, and governor, to make sure these doses will not be “diverted or lost” as France’s stockpile apparently was.

But this plant was presumably in production of this very product when it was shut. The potential efficacy of this drug has been known for a long time and all the arrangements to resume production should have been made even if the government had to guarantee costs in the event hydroxychloroquin proved ineffectual.

The delay in production is not just limited to this plant but I was referring to a delay in production over all. For example, this drug was available in Germany without prescription until the news broke and it is no longer available.

Where are you getting the idea that this was a shuttered plant?
The articles I’ve seen only say they are restarting production of hydroxychloroquine.

For a long time American politics has been the worst in the democratic world with respect to showboating over action.

I wonder how much of what we are seeing is just more of this fool’s theater. The president invoked the DPA on March 18. Have any ventilators rolled off the line since? As you note, future production of this medicine was reported on on March 23. 13 days later, is there any production, in WV or anywhere else in the US?

Perhaps my expectations are unrealistic, but it seems that in a country where everyone considered this a genuine crisis and where the political classes took their job seriously, things would move faster.

It’s STAGGERING, the worldwide need.

10s of billions of pills, potentially.
