coronavirus: Can hydroxychloroquine help with COVID-19 illness? Vero Beach patient says so

Last week John and Marie McConnell made sure their wills were up to date.

Ill at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital Thursday night and awaiting results of a COVID-19 test after feeling poorly for about two weeks, John McConnell, 65, hit a turning point.

“I knew they were preparing me for ICU and probably a ventilator,” said McConnell, who’d heard survival rates were low for COVID-19 ventilator patients.

The odds were not good for McConnell, a fit, former nationally ranked college tennis player and former senior vice president of programming for ABC Radio who moved to Vero Beach full time in September.

Would he get moved onto a ventilator or try a pharmaceutical unapproved for COVID-19 use, one the head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had reservations about?

“I knew there was internal debate about whether to put me on the Plaquenil,” said McConnell, noting Posca answered all his questions. “I had no hesitation. I told him ‘my trust is with you.’ ”

Friday morning, though, things were worse. McConnell’s temperature peaked at 103.5 degrees.

“(On the phone) Marie and I were saying goodbyes to one another, and my kids were, too,” McConnell said. “But the Plaquenil was working in my system. The luck of the timing is what made the difference.”

Hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug dubbed a “gift from God” by US President Donald Trump for its potential ability to fight the new coronavirus, was found to be no more effective than standard treatment in a small Chinese study.

By Friday night, there was no more ventilator talk, McConnell said. By Saturday, he began to feel better.

The headline in the story is a lie.

There are often unintended side effects or even long term damage for new drugs and this is why they are hesitant to sign off on them until there have been solid studies.

However, this is not a new drug! It has been around forever and its side effects are well understood.

If I catch this and become symptomatic I will ask my doctor to put me on it. Why not? As you say, I have read enough anecdotal stuff to feel pretty confident that it could work and from what I have read and heard - this works better than everything else.

I will do more than ask. I will beg, threaten, bribe... whatever is necessary.

I feel so bad for symptomatic people who first are told they should not get tested until their symptoms are severe, and then when they reach that point they have to wait a few more days to get results. Especially knowing they can take a sudden turn for the worse at any point.

I wonder how many positive test results are reported after the patient has died.

Exactly. One if the biggest mistakes we are making in this first wave is waiting until patients are in serious condition before starting this cocktail.

Get a rapid test out and treat all positives. Hell, treat PUI’s that are strongly suspected of having developed COVid disease

I get steamed when I hear Dr Birx and Mike Pence day this is how we want to target the testing. And Pence doing a tap dance whenever he’s asked if and when we’re going to get more tests

Even Trump today said Pence is brilliant at not answering a question

Yes. The media has touted again and again the drug’s side effects, particularly for some people, as if the doctors are not aware of the general cautions and the specific cautions for some folks.

So many of the articles have been written as if to say “side effects” means everyone has the worst and most extreme side effects and doctors could give it to people with certain conditions who should not take it all. Stupid journalism preying on ignorant people.

That's a great question. Why must double-blind tests be the only permissible method for establishing the safety and effectiveness of a drug?

“That’s a great question. Why must double-blind tests be the only permissible method for establishing the safety and effectiveness of a drug? “

I understand the good rationale for that, under normal circumstances; you get the wide range of patients with a wide range medical backgrounds which help demonstrate the ramifications of the drugs across a broad group of patients.

But a pandemic needs to be approached like emergency triage - do what works to save lives, IF it saves lives. There will be time later to understand and record all the ifs ands and buts that need to be understood about a drug or method. And, even in the emergency some of those ifs ands and buts will be learned and noted.

Trump needs to force Big Pharma to produce masses of this stuff domestically—and then reopen the country.
