Social Security recipients who don’t usually file tax returns will automatically get $1,200 payments, Treasury says in reversal

The Treasury announced late Wednesday that Social Security beneficiaries who typically do not file a tax return will automatically get the $1,200 payment.

The announcement is a reversal from earlier in the week when the Internal Revenue Service said everyone would need to file some sort of tax return in order to qualify for the payments. Democrats and some Republicans criticized the IRS for requiring so many extra hurdles for this vulnerable population to get aid when the government already has their information on file.

The reversal came as the Trump administration tries to rapidly get stimulus payments out to Americans in the face of the quickest economic decline in modern history.

“Social Security recipients who are not typically required to file a tax return need to take no action, and will receive their payment directly to their bank account,” said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin.

So what if anyone does, it is the truth and I need no one to verify that on an anonymous site such as this. I have nothing to prove and you have nothing to prove either.

By the way the last /updated bill was written, I thought that was clear. It states everyone with a ss# (with phase out for top earners) removed the part ‘earnings greater than zero’.

If they don’t have your direct deposit info, they will mail the check. Homeless folks should contact the irs. I’m serious about that.

Maybe because it’s helpful. SS recipients live on very little. Be kind.

yep. as long as they have a social security number, they’re golden ...though this kind of money in that kind of community is going to result in a large number of deaths due to alcohol and drug overdoses and fatal robberies ...

This is new

The IRS does not have my direct deposit information. What can I do?

In the coming weeks, Treasury plans to develop a web-based portal for individuals to provide their banking information to the IRS online, so that individuals can receive payments immediately as opposed to checks in the mail.

I gave an obnoxious answer to an obnoxious question.

Thanks for having my back.

I was AGAINST this huge stimulus and I think it could have probably come in at half a trillion and I KNOW it screws next generations

And I admire the freeper FUNGI if he really is not going to accept the check but since it’s direct deposit and he doesn’t have to do anything to get it, is he going to send a check to the IRS made out to “National Debt”??

It is what it is. And my mom could use it and I help her so it helps me.

I protested it until it was signed. no point protesting it now!!

It will help a lot of people here during a tough time.

We will owe 30 trillion when the 6 trillion total of stimuli are done

But honest, we could knock off a trillion a year if congress really wanted to

Oh well i’m babbling now because im’ tired lol

sorry!!

It is still unclear if they will send a check in the mail if you don’t give them bank account information.

it has been the law since 2013, that you have electronic deposit for Social Security.

“Seniors on Soc. Sec who didn’t file tax return were always scheduled to receive through SS dept.”

totally false: up until about six hours ago the IRS coronavirus website gave chapter and verse about how SS recipients who normally didn’t need to file HAD TO FILE to to PROVE they were eligible and to get their checks direct deposited ...

As soon as a whole bunch of Senators, Dems and Pubs, raised hell a few hours ago, Treasury Secretary Munchin forced the IRS to obey the provisions of the new law regarding SS recipients, and the IRS hurriedly changed their tune and their website.

https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus

i know this for a fact because i’ve been following the issued closely on the irs website and saw the change get made today myself ...

income restrictions work the other way for the stimulus bill: you don’t get the money if you make TOO MUCH ...

Elderly on Medicaid can't have savings over $2,000. This could kick many of them over that.

“I wonder if the nursing home/Medicaid will take the money. “

interesting question, though this money is neither SS nor Medicaid, so unless they’ve written something into their contract about automatically getting to scarf up any other kind of money, i would think they’d not be able to touch it ... the stimulus money should be direct deposited into her bank account, so don’t see how they could extract it unless they have power of attorney or joint custody of the account ...
