We threw French fries from the pan to the bag, added salt and shook it...the bag absorbed the grease.
We did the book covers, too.

That brings back memories of school back in the mid-50s. In New Orleans, the groceries used to print hurricane tracking charts on the paper bags - which in turn ended up as textbook covers.
