The Democrat doubled down on remarks he made last week defending his decision -- or lack thereof -- not to cancel February 25 Mardi Gras events. He conceded that the raucous partying scene "likely" contributed to the spread of the virus in the New Orleans area, where health experts now say the next coronavirus "hot spot" is emerging. Just one day prior to the city's Mardi Gras festivities, the president said "the coronavirus is very much under control" before going on to tout the day's stock market gains.
Speaking on several Sunday morning TV news programs, Bel Edwards tried to re-focus the conversation on the state's need for respirators and federal government supplies rather than rehashing the past. He warned Louisiana's largest city will run out of ventilators by April 4 and hospital beds by April 10.
But Bel Edwards did confirm Sunday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- and all other federal government agencies -- made no mention of scaling back Mardi Gras celebrations over coronavirus concerns.

The last day of the Mardi Gras season was February 25. That is two weeks before the NBA and MLB canceled/postponed their seasons. That’s four weeks before Florida closed its beaches. As I recall, a lot of folks on this forum ripped the NBA for caceling their season. Who here would have supported a Mardi Gras shut down on February 15?
Does he have a person around him that could, maybe, have given him advice? Someone like...say...a Department of Health?
A lot of readers on this thread are being weirdly influenced by a pot-stirring article in Newsweek that’s trying to whip up a controversy. You’d think people would be more wary than that, but I guess not.
Isn’t “Laissez les bons temps rouler!” the Louisiana state motto?
Trump thought it was a big enough deal to stop incoming flights from China on January 31. Might have been a hint to the Governor that it was a big deal.
You want to party in the street during this outbreak then that's your business, just be prepared for the consequences.
The Dog ate my Homework...
Local mayor - Dem.
Governor - Dem.
Just like in Katrina. ‘Nuff said.
Not at all, just with Dems everywhere. Especially those in office. Dems don’t understand Federalism so they want to constantly shift to the Feds and wait for nanny federal government to save them. It’s why they’re never prepared in crises and emergency situations.
Exactly right. Ray Nagin and Kathleen Blanco were the local Dems in charge then. Catastrophic. Eerily similar to today.
Here’s what they will do. If someone dies, they’ll say “Well, no one from the federal government told us to close it down.” (To be read with your best annoying, sniveling voice.)
They desperately want to do to Trump what they did to Bush (Bush/Katrina.)
The Democrat kind. Same thing with New York, telling people not to cancel restaurant and entertainment plans or stop taking the buses and subway. Always Democrat disasters.
Blue dog: supports 2nd Amdt., reportedly, and pro-life. The only way they can win in the deep South.
Pretty much is, although blue dogs get elected from time to time as governor. New Orleans proper, not so much.
When was Mardi Gras? 10 through 25 February (Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday the 26th).
Match this time period to when the 1.) chinese opthamologist whistleblower died (was untreated and killed, as well as the parents who were infected living with him).
That date was February 7th, two days after the impeachment acquittal. Trump ordered no Chinese inflights on January 31st. This a@@clown governor was briefed... with all the others on this travel ban, as it would affect tourism and business.
He made the decision not to listen to what CDC was saying... on January 31st.
Pretty sure by end of January, Trump had already issued travel restrictions from China......
Maybe Trump should just make himself interim Governor of each Democratic state?
As the governor did she ever OFFICIALLY ASK the President for advice about continuing on with the event?
No president can read a governor’s mind.
“...what the heck is wrong with the mayors and governors...”
Edwards won because there was an upcoming LSU/Alabama game and that was what really counts. People were too excited to vote.
Also, Abraham’s voters voted for Edwards.
My memory of the New Orleans Katrina fiasco is NOAA and President GW Bush warned Governor Kathleen Blanco and NO’s Mayor Ray Nagin to evacuate NO’s as Hurricane Katrina appeared to be heading for a direct hit on the city. They ignored the warnings.
After the flooding began, the idiot mayor opened up the NO’s football stadium for people to shelter in. With no apparent preplanning, they quickly realized it was a huge mistake as the ran out of food and the toilets all became inoperable, etc. The school b uses were stranded in the school’s paring lots when they could have been used to evacuate people.
Here we are 17 years later, and the same sort of incompetence is repeating itself. Why on earth anyone votes for Democrats for any executive position is beyond my comprehension.
