(DES MOINES, Iowa) As hospitals and nursing homes desperately search for hand sanitizer amid the coronavirus outbreak, federal regulators are preventing ethanol producers from providing millions of gallons of alcohol that could be transformed into the germ-killing mixture.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administrations roadblock has been frustrating the health care and ethanol industries, which have been calling for a relaxed regulation to deal with the public health care emergency.
Hand sanitizer is a big part of our lives, said Eric Barber, CEO of Mary Lanning Healthcare, a hospital in Hastings, Nebraska. We cant get any. We order it and its just not available.
The problem for the ethanol industry is that most plants make food-grade ethanol, one step below the highest pharmaceutical grade. But since the plants arent certified to comply with stringent production standards designed to protect quality of medicines, food ingredients and dietary supplements, the FDA doesnt want the alcohol used for a product to be applied to the skin.

There are recipes for Everclear that involve infusing some flavor(s) into it for a period of time. Once infused, it is supposed to be mixed with something to lower the alcohol content. Some people swear by it. I am not a hard liquor or mixed drink person, so I wouldn’t know.
The Democrat thugs who run the EPA will be doing anything possible to heighten the economic destruction for political reasons.
“Im thinking that a face mask soaked in Ethanol would be a good way to go into the grocery store.”
I’ve seen plenty of people soaked in ethanol in the grocery store! Masks are optional.
You can even buy Everclear in DC believe it or not.
They are pretty common around central texas. There is at least 6 within 30 miles of my area. There is even a place called bru thru where you can get any mix drink you like and they put in Styrofoam cup with a piece of tape over the lid, supposedly to deter you from drinking and driving. They make a good white russian from what I recall :-)
Even my local feed store sells beer/wine/liquor. Its pretty handy. The lads will load your feed, stock your cooler and the ice is free. You can interact right with the cashier as you pull up and they take care of the rest. You can even get your vet supplies. Never have to leave the driver seat.
Ethanol has been subsidized long enough. I want the feds to end the subsidies for ethanol and let it succeed or fail on its own merits.
Take you ethanol and stick...no drink it!
Thanks. Does 30 second exposure 2X-4X per day pose any risks?
I’m not sure. When I was looking at a DIY replacement for a spray deodorant from Burt’s Bees that was discontinued a few years back, I read several discussions about this. Initially, some opted for isopropyl alcohol because it was cheap, readily available, and had high enough alcohol content for their needs.
Soon after, there were discussions that this might not be a good idea because of the toxicity issue, so they started recommending a high proof alcohol instead, if you could find it. Some people found 80 or 100 proof vodka worked for them. Others needed more alcohol content.
A lot of people have been suggesting isopropyl alcohol for a DIY hand sanitizer, so I don’t know how serious the toxicity issues are with it. Hand sanitizers like Purell and Germ-X use ethyl alcohol (with maybe trace amounts of isopropyl alcohol), so there must be a reason for it since isopropyl alcohol is cheaper.
Got one in Arlington :) Also, Abbot relaxed the laws a bit for restaurants with bars, allowing them to serve mixed beverages via carryout or delivery. Then there’s the DaqShacks, but those are wine-based and not nearly as fun as a real-deal Hand Grenade lol.

Well, of COURSE you can; San Fran Nan’s gotta have hers.
I made a nice batch of hand sanitizer last weekend.
Or 120 to 140 proof...
Chemical pneumonia is no fun.
You'd be vaping Ethanol.
Yep we made our own after I had ordered regular sanitizer a month ago from Amazon before the SHTF
Sort of like Cipro. It begins as hydrochloride-salt that is insoluble in pure water or alcohol, must be dissolved in 0.1N hydrochloric acid solution first.
A burning sensation may initially be experienced as it enters a veinavoid administering to the end of an extremity as there is not sufficient blood flow to provide dilution, and avoid point of entry issues.
