'My mother is not expendable': As Trump itches to get U.S. back to work, experts warn of deaths, economic calamity
NBC "News" ^ | March 24, 2020 | By Allan Smith and Shannon Pettypiece

The clamor for a swift return to normal has started to pick up in recent days - particularly in the right-wing media ecosystem.

That's come as President Donald Trump has suggested that he could quickly move to change his administration's guidelines in dealing with the coronavirus outbreak in hope of returning some people to work in less than three weeks and ending the stock market slide.

No example drew more attention than an interview that Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a Republican, gave Monday night on Fox News, in which he suggested that some elderly Americans - the group most at risk of death from COVID-19 - should be willing to sacrifice their lives so the economy can gain steam.

"No one reached out to me and said, 'As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for its children and grandchildren?' And if that is the exchange, I'm all in," said Patrick, 70.

Meanwhile, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., one of Trump's closest congressional allies, tweeted Monday: "Try running an economy with major hospitals overflowing, doctors and nurses forced to stop treating some because they can't help all, and every moment of gut-wrenching medical chaos being played out in our living rooms, on TV, on social media, and shown all around the world."

"There is no functioning economy unless we control the virus," he added.

For his part, Cuomo did suggest that a strategy in which some elements of the shutdown are loosened - with less vulnerable people returning to work - may be possible in the coming weeks if both the public health and economic approaches are "done intelligently."

In the last week my former neighbor had over ten people working renovating a house for his mom.

People in densely-populated Singapore and Hong Kong (we’re talking NYC-dense here), where white collar workers are squashed into tiny cubicles, are managing to go back to work without significant new infections. The secret is face masks. Given the toll imposed by infections, whether in terms of suffering or potential death, I’d say it makes sense to charge anyone not wearing a mask with aggravated assault. Minimum 6 months in prison and a felony record. After a few highly-publicized convictions, combined with the media’s klieg lights on the scofflaws, everyone will wear a mask.

Traffic fatalities have never in the past all occurred during one week. If that were the case Henry Ford would not be a. Household name. You might recall the reason the US developed roads and cars was because train wrecks killed 100 people at once.

If you pat yourself on the back for paying employees $12/hour, I’ll pat you on the back for living on $24,000/year if you show up at my place next year.

I would be careful. One could make the case that “Pro Lifers” who want to put grandma on an ice flow because of their 401k weren’t very committed after all. I would never say such a thing myself.

One of DiFi’s former staffers is writing the same in the Sacramento Bee as an editorial. Looks like the Soros-DNC talking point of the day!

In a war soldiers are expendable.

We are in a war with the virus and the elderly are soldiers on the front lines.

Some casualties will be expected.

The question for politicians is “Do we advance while taking some casualties or do we retreat trying to save everybody?”

With the wide spread use of hydroxychloroquine the death rate should be dropping by this weekend.

“Guaranteed Basic Income”

Is that the same Uncle Sam that has the Federal Reserve shaft bank depositors year after year?

I won’t even get $200 in interest income this year.

“Each of the 50 states has the ultimate power to drag quarantine breakers off Chinese style.”

In that case shouldn’t we be distributing copies of the Constitution to serve as emergency replacements until the nation’s toilet paper shortage is alleviated?

“My mother is not expendable.” That’s so typical of Cuomo and his personal based arrogance. You can probably imagine that his mother lives somewhere where the transmission of this infection is certainly not that kind of a grave concern.

Reminds me of some remark he made to the NRA following some incident involving a deranged kid running amok with a firearm at a school (not the Parkland tragedy). This time, he invoked his own kids and their safety in that comment when we all here know that very well likely where he and other pompous and liberal wealthy New Yorkers send their kids to school that their safety from these uncontrolled deviants again is among their least likely concerns.

The same “experts” said as recently as 2 weeks ago, that the virus threat remains VERY LOW for human to human transmission. How wrong they were. Still waiting for a public apology for them getting it so wrong.

Face masks might be capable of being sterilized in say a 225 degree oven and reused day after day.

They might be held on by rubber bands.
