While eager as everyone hoping this drug combo cures COVID-19, I am cautiously optimistic. The French clinical trial was a VERY small sample of just 20 patients. Hoping, hoping for success...then hoping some more that the folks who already take Plaquenil for lupus are able to get their next Rx refilled.
Uh, the FDA approved hydroxychloroquine in 1955.
Drugs only get approved once.
First of all, this article is a real blowout. Thousands of people in the US are not dying. And the ones in that position are patients with medical conditions. But the use of this Hydroxychloroquine does have a history of creating heart rhythm problems

One of the triggers for the illness to be a danger is heart issues. So, as there is no set amount of drug to be prescribed, and it can cause heart and muscle problems, it needs to be tested enough to make sure it isn’t a danger to those that actually need it.

Many doctors still don’t know about it and don’t want to know about it. For a doctor to prescribe it, the doctor must do so on a “compassionate” basis, which word is irrelevant. The doctor must fill out forms amounting to a research report and send them to a federal office—not something that most doctors want to do, at least not in slow moving rural areas and some small town hospitals.
The CDC office folks want to see experiments to establish perfect doses first and have said that the wrong doses might “do more harm than good.”
Unfortunately, scientific proof comes slowly. Doctors are using anecdotal evidence of what works and what doesn’t.
