HARRISBURG — Challenges are mounting to Gov. Tom Wolf’s order late Thursday directing all but “life-sustaining” businesses to shut down, with the first of what could be a wave of lawsuits contending that the governor has overstepped his authority under the state Constitution.

On Friday afternoon, the Harrisburg-based law firm of Costopoulos, Foster & Field petitioned the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for an emergency injunction to allow the firm to reopen. The governor’s order, among a list of other businesses, required law firms to close their physical locations.

“The governor’s order is so broad and sweeping, it is manifestly unconstitutional and illegal,” wrote William C. Costopoulos, a partner in the firm and a well-known defense lawyer who has represented elected and other officials in criminal cases

Law firms are not the only businesses that have pushed back against the governor’s order.

Earlier Friday, the state’s leading manufacturers asked Wolf to revise his order, saying it is blocking essential supply chains from providing products to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Like government knows best. Particularly, Rats

Wolfe is a fool always has been... teachers union pushed hack.

There is to date, no justification for such sweeping orders as to lock down the state as he has ordered.

Pushback like this is long overdue.

A gun shop also has a law suit.

The pushback is only getting started. If this goes on more than a week, you’re really going to see pushback—from the denizens of the inner cities.

Yeah, but they will burn their own neighborhoods down.

Businesses should be reclassified not as essential v non essential but based on the risk they pose to spreading the virus. For example.

A retail shop with unlimited access to the public which handle goods and interact with employees-high risk.

A law firm which sees people by appointment and practices safe distancing practices. Lower risk.

A factory not opened to the public that has sanitation protocols in place. Low risk. Especially if they are part of a supply chain.

It should not be assumed that all businesses carry the same risk.

Gov. Ige of Hawaii has done the same including churches. That causes me real problems since churches are constitutionally protected. How much of reach is it to the start martial law, which CA is contemplating, to then confiscation of guns..

I believe we are approaching some very serious issues, not China flu, but our basic government and liberties. Be diligent.

Lock down like they are trying to do is going to have to see some very serious numbers and real threat to be accepted by the populace.. and thus far that is not what is being seen.

What do they think will happen when rents come due or folks have no money for food because they have been furloughed because the government shut down their place of employment?

Folks will sacrifice, but if they aren’t seeing a direct and real threat to justify it they won’t voluntarily continue to comply.

Now I am not saying those numbers and spread are not coming but if they don’t this sort of extremism will make the problem far far worse and in a different way.

Yes but retail stores where people buy food MUST remain open.

So what’s the point of the list?

Government should not be picking winners and losers, ever. F’n morons that lack experience in the real world to make decisions. Tell me what some desk jockey knows about manufacturing. Probably never stepped in a factory. There are zero ways that they can have the information or experience to make those types of decisions. Government tends to cause more harm than good when they make decisions for responsible citizens.

It will be interesting to compare and contrast the was conservative and so called conservatives handle this versus fascist democrats (but I repeat myself).

The differences could be significant, or not...

Does not do any good if the governor shuts down the court.

But they are going to do so. So you change the criteria so that it makes sense. Plus you have people who know about such matters (infectious disease specialists, epidemiologists)make recommendations and most importantly you allow for appeals. You just don’t make a broad announcement shutting down all businesses. If you do, there had better be a pile of money on hand for compensating employers and employees.

If I don’t have access to a court, then I don’t have a government. I will act accordingly.

Here in California as of to day, the priests, pastors, rabbi’s, whatever, supposedly can’t be in their churches or any place of worship.

Even the church secretaries cannot be on the church grounds.

I have no legal standing to challenge this idiotic shutdown order — because I’ve been openly ignoring it. LOL.

Use some common sense folks. If an auto/tractor parts place is considered not life sustaining the what happens when the Billy-bobs tractor needs a part==>Billy Bobs crops are tended to==>no raw materiel for food==>grocery stores shut down==>all the nice guys you let out of prison come knocking on my door.

It is better than a broad shut down. You could have at risk businesses weighed on essential v non essential and plan accordingly. For example you mitigate the risk of grocery stores by shortening hours so the store can be sanitized. You might even limit the number of shoppers allowed at one time.

Shutting down everything is a bad idea.

they have suspended the Constitution.
Freedom of Assembly
Freedom of Religion

“For your own good”, “for your own protection”, “ for the greater good”..

It’s irrelevant.
