The Trump administration, moving quickly to halt the spread of the coronavirus, is seriously considering grounding all passenger air traffic for up to 30 days, temporarily halting stock trading on Wall Street, and imposing a shelter-in-place rule, according to officials.
Key officials have begun alerting industry leaders, Capitol Hill, and agencies that the “radical” plan could come early next week if the warlike efforts to stop the spread of the virus fail.
On Thursday, the administration began to prepare the nation for 9/11-style moves when the State Department issued a “Level Four” warning against traveling overseas. The warning is the most severe that the department has.
In a notice, the State Department said Americans traveling abroad may find their travel “severely disrupted” and “may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite time frame.”

On March 12 I received a text from a family member that a source in the Pentagon was saying there’d be a nationwide four week lockdown in one or two weeks. I dismissed it as wild nonsense.

I agree with you. We did this thing stupid so far. We could have contained this, kept our most vulnerable protected, and dealt with the disease without destroying our economy.

This covid-19 is more effective Bio-weapon than any weapon used in Iraq war, Afghan war, Korean war, Libya war, WW I, and may be even nukes. Because nukes leave evidence of origin. If covid-19 did not accidentally get released in Wuhan city, and China quietly released later in America, millions of Americans would be dead before medical research could track down the virus, and our gov’t would not know place of origin.

I guess I want to know more about such an action.
There are areas that are hard hit - NYC is in for a rough time.
So are parts of California, Florida.
But you restrict travel into/out of *those* areas. You don't do it for all areas - over the entire United States.
Prediction - if President Trump orders this - he will not be re-elected. People that lose their jobs - and there will be tens of millions - and are not near these COVID-19 hot spots, will blame him.
No amount of $1,200 checks is going to make up for wrecked retirements, bankruptcies, closed businesses, lost employment, etc.
No amount of "we beat COVID-19" will make up for the people who will lose so much financially. This will be especially true in areas that suffer no significant adverse casualties from COVID-19.
Truly hope I am wrong. But I believe President Trump will lose the election if he orders such a national lockdown.
The numbers do not come anywhere near justifying self imposed house arrest. In fact the numbers do not justify the first two either.

The numbers pale in comparison to flu outbreaks. How can we inflict such profound damage to society and the economy based on such a low fatality rate? Cureently there are 218 deaths; the flu kills tens of thousands each year. There is no sense of proportionality here.

I found out tonight that a fraternity brother of mine most likely has it. He says his wife and daughter have already been confirmed and he will get his results tomorrow. Says he is running fever between 100 and 101, but the body aches are the worst part. He jokes that it is karma because he has spent the last month on social media trying to convince people to calm down and quit freaking out about the virus. A white guy.
