Why there will soon be tons of toilet paper, and what food may be scarce, according to supply chain experts

Stuck rationing toilet paper because you didn't stockpile during the coronavirus panic over the last few days? Don't worry, according to supply chain experts.

"All the grocery stores are going to have pallets of toilet paper sitting in the aisles and nobody is going to buy it because who needs to buy toilet paper when you got a year's worth sitting in your garage," Daniel Stanton, a supply chain expert and author of "Supply Chain Management for Dummies," tells CNBC Make It. But what about food? Even if the COVID-19 pandemic stretches over months (President Donald Trump said it could last until August), there will no big food shortages, especially on staples like milk, eggs, cheese, bread and meat, according to three supply chain experts who spoke to Make It.

No TP at local Walmart and 2 chain grocery stores as of my shopping this morning. No Rahmen noodles to be found. And pasta also. Canned fruits in short supply.

Little know fact.

They sent eggs on ships with the colonists when they came over.

They burried them in lard.

“Get ‘liquid eggs’.”

Liquid egg market is tanking (many restaurants use liquid, not shell egg).
Shell egg (eggs in cartons) sources can’t keep up with orders now.

In the meat department of my Meijer store, all the lower priced chicken products were gone, leaving only beef products.......

Same here in central Illinois. What is up with that?

"I don’t understand why toilet paper is being hoarded. Chicomvirus isn’t a gastrointestinal disease like Asiatic cholera. It’s a respiratory ailment."

Exactly, I've been saying this for the past week, to anyone who will listen. Mentioned it to one of the workers in the vegetable section of Wegman's yesterday. It's in Syracuse, N.Y., so I don't get to go there often because it's 45 minutes away. They carry Zweigle's hots, which are produced in Rochester, and you can't get them here in the Rome/Utica area. I buy their white hots for my oldest son who lives in the Albany area. I usually call ahead a couple of days, and ask them to put aside a few packages, and I'm glad I did, because all the Zweigle's in the display case were gone.

flour can make a lot of bulk food- bread, pancakes, pastas, etc- people don’t wanna go shopping while the virus peaks in their area, so they are stocking up on foods that can stretch out a few meals- and gettign lots of canned foods too=- those shelves are empty too-

And no one knows how to make bread?

I suspect that 95% of people couldn't make a 100% whole wheat loaf that didn't resemble a brick.

What is up with that?

The cost of beef these days. I used to eat lots of steaks but can't afford them anymore.....

As a side note, after the chicken was gone, the beef slowly disappeared beginning with the cheaper stuff like hamburger...

Yet the in-house bakery racks are full of hoagie, French, dinner, etc, rolls. Bags and bags of flour tortillas, too. There was also a whole rack of Kings Hawaiian rolls.

Heck, I saw “garlic knots” yesterday at Sam’s...small rolls that have been heavily doused with garlic butter and bagged up 15-20 to a bag. Pop them in the over...yum.

Meat counters were mostly full. There were even those $5 rotisserie chickens...plenty.

“A prepper on that Prepper TV show from years ago suggested coating eggs in caster oil allowing them to last for months.”

Yep. In America, eggs are washed in warm soapy water before getting weighed and cartoned. That removes their natural air-blocking coating.

Carton eggs are not washed in most other countries (their women can deal with eggs the way they exit the hens).

[[Over stocking eggs just means you will waste them.]]

when the eggs start getting a bit old- we make egg salad out of them- which will go several days- quick easy meals once the salad is made- We’ve always stored eggs way past what they recommend- and don’t really notice any issues with them except when they get quite old-

They are also good for cooking with lots of other foods- quick easy meals like hash and eggs- which we eat for dinners lunch etc- ham and eggs- steak and eggs- etc- We don’t hoard them though, but will buy like 2 dozen when on sale, and they sit for quite awhile in fridge-

[[I don’t understand why toilet paper is being hoarded. Chicomvirus isn’t a gastrointestinal]]

That’s not he reason they hoard it- they are hoarding it because they don’t wanna keep running to the store every few days like usual for toilet paper - and they also know everyone else is hoarding it for the same reason, so they are fearful they won’t get any more- so they hoard it too- it’s a snowball effect of fear-

A friend reported that in her area in the Midwest, no stores have potatoes, toilet paper, or hand sanitizers. Also missing are cereals and eggs. Many shelves are empty. Some shortage of bottled water. However, there are plenty of milk, bananas, coffee, and bread.
