Polls across Chicago opened Tuesday morning amid a cloud of concerns about how the coronavirus pandemic could affect voter turnout. Reports of polling places without the necessary equipment or poll workers were cropping up across Cook County.
Days before Election Day, efforts to contain the virus escalated in Illinois with the announcement of schools temporarily shuttering and restaurants shifting to only take out or delivery services. A spokesman for the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners said city election officials asked Gov. J.B. Pritzker to call off in-person voting but the governor declined. The governors office issued a statement Tuesday mid-morning blasting the board.
The Governor cannot unilaterally cancel or delay an election. Elections are the cornerstone of our democracy and we could not risk confusion and disenfranchisement in the courts. No one is saying this is a perfect solution. We have no perfect solutions at the moment. We only have least bad solutions.
Whats concerning is that the board has time to play politics instead of doing their job. Instead of hosting a press call to pass on the blame for their failures, we would urge the Chicago Board of Elections to focus on ensuring our democracy can continue as uninterrupted as possible by troubleshooting the issues at the polls.

The Ohio Governor got it right (including defying a hair brained judge).
Illinois could have done the same thing.
Telling isnt it?
They havent the slightest problem upending all of our lives, yet at the slightest hint of delaying Sleepy Joes already inevitable victory over Crazy Bernie they stand solid against.
When I lived in Chicago, it was never busy when I voted. Sometimes I was the only voter there. In the most recent municipal election, overall turnout was around 30%. So what does “extremely low turnout” mean today? Because not many people show up, they can turn away the people who do?
They didn’t roll the buses for this one huh? Just give it to Plugs already. Drop the pretenses.
Sure the “vote” are already stuff in the box
Yeah, I always forget about that!
Governor J. B. Pritzker (affectionately known as “Jabba”) is a partisan hack who is in over his head.
He inherited his wealth (never really had to work) and self-funded his candidacy which was all of the requirements necessary for the Democratic Machine to slate him.
Prior to being elected governor, Jabba was best known for losing a Congressional race to Jan Schakowsky (finishing third out of three candidates despite lavish spending).
Pritzker even contributed heavily to the disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich hoping to secure a gubernatorial appointment to a vacant position without result. The FBI has it all tape. Ten hours or more.
Let’s wait for Pritzker’s media handlers to find a way to spin this in order to blame Trump. Pritzker’s “Trump Derangement Syndrome” is worse than COVID-19.
Could Bernie win? His voters are surely more motivated than Joe’s.
I was gonna say the same thing. He had no problem “unilaterally canceling” the services of bars and restaurants, which are privately-run institutions, UNLIKE the government run election day.
Your statement is exactly correct. Governor Prickster has spent the past week getting people all panicky and now they’re upset no one’s showing up to vote.
Not to be outdone by other governors, or mayors, look for Governor Big Boy with fries to enact even worse measures to keep us ‘safe’ once this pesky election is over.
THis is Bernie Sander’s big chance.
If his supporters are “die-hard”, they will cross paths with coronavirus to vote.
Meanwhile, the old people voting for Biden will stay home.
Now, what does the DNC do if Bernie wins Illinois with 10% of the normal turnout — do they say “that isn’t fair” and throw out the numbers?
Jabba the gov. shut down all small business but did nothing in terms of relief of Property taxes, income tax, and fees used to feed the public employee union AFSCME beast. Kind of like the Paulie Cicero character in Goodfellas: Business closed? F*(** you, still pay me....
The state Supreme Court in Ohio ruled in the middle of the night that DeWine could postpone the primary till June. In an unsigned 4-0 ruling, 2 Justices up for reelection and DeWine’s son recused themselves.
I think it’s better to get it over with. As of now the danger is low, it might be higher in June for all we know.
Chicago Board of elections is pathetic, I actually have to side with Prickzer over them, they wanted a last minute cancellation and move to “mail in only” after it was too late for that to be feasible.
Very low turnout in IL which should be good for Bernie.
But Trib article said as of a couple hours ago, 68% of the voters in Chi were over 50. If that’s true we can forget about a Bernie upset.
Dems will be pushing “mail in” for November, rat Senator Wyden introduced a bill to force all states to allow it.
Does that include the dead ?
Old and vulnerable will stay home. Bernie wins.
Pritzker could dress as “Big Boy” at Halloween and win the best costume contest.
