Casinos ask Congress for emergency aid as coronavirus toll sweeps industry

Casinos have joined the airline industry in asking Congress for emergency financial help as Las Vegas and other tourist destinations take a severe financial hit from the coronavirus outbreak.

The requested aid for the casino companies, raised by lobbyists in recent days, could come in the form of a comprehensive bailout package, similar to what lawmakers may provide to airlines, cruise companies and the hospitality industry. Other possibilities include direct cash payments, deferred taxes, or special bankruptcy protections, said two people with knowledge of the conversations, who were not authorized to speak publicly.

One person said that on a strategy call Monday with members of the American Gaming Association, which represents the industry, a representative of Wynn Resorts raised the possibility of the industry seeking cash payments.

Here's hoping they all go broke and don't get a cent from the government.

Bring back Don Rickles and keep 'em laughing.

For crying out loud. They are sitting on mountains of cash. I guess in politics, the house always wins as well. This stuff is what is making me sick.

No help for casinos. No help for cruise lines.

I question whether or not there should be any bailouts.

If they don’t have business interruption insurance, then up theirs.

If they do have it, then let the insurers cover it. Then bail out insurers.

Nobody needs a casino.

Everybody needs insurance.

In Alabama the Poarch Creek Indians own all the casinos. They’re spending so much money to take control of lotto in Alabama.

They give several thousand dollars and benefits to individuals every year for doing nothing. I say cut those folks back if they need instead of asking taxpayers.

No. The airlines should get emergency help because their survival is essential to business. Casinos are not essential to anything.

This is what happens when Uncle Sam pulls out his wallet— everybody crowds in with outstretched hands, crying “poor me!”

I have sympathy for the average people trying to make a living in Vegas, because the tourist money is going away and so will the jobs. I have none for the casino owners.

I do sympathize with the poor casinos, losing all that money. I say the Federal Government should immediately give them all comps to the Crab-leg Buffet, free tickets to the topless revue, and a coupon good for 25% off drinks (excluding premium liquors.)

I can’t believe it took this to bring me out of my self imposed hiatus. No more corporate/business bailouts period. If an industry or particular company truly is important then it’ll survive. If the economy does need to be stimulated, and it probably will need a significant shot, then bail out the taxpayers and let us decide what business should survive by how we use the money. The airlines, insurance, healthcare, pharma tech, entertainment/media and banking/finance industries can all go pound sand. Their business models are antiquated, barbaric and immoral.

I believe in capitalism, I believe in the free market but a society needs a common moral foundation for any economic system to function and we threw that out long ago. Any system, economic or political, will work when the people are moral, nothing works when they aren’t.

Corporate America has lost sight of the fact that the bottom line is NOT the next quarterly P&L.

Something needs to be decided about factory workers before the luxury industry like casino gambling and the airlines. It’s ridiculous I even have to read a headline like this!

It would only be ‘fair’ that I be GIVEN money to spend on the airlines, casinos etc etc.

GIMMEE GIMMEE

Then again, when the Government willingly takes your taxes, then ORDERS you to shut down, who should pick up the slack.

Then again, if no one can work or pay taxes who/what/where does the (so called) ‘leadership’ turn to?

Maybe we can convince those that have been STEALING FROM US all these years to give the money back???

(LEG)...Who needs Don Rickles???

It’s recommended that families have a reserve cash emergency fund that will carry them for three months. If casinos haven’t prepared an emergency fund, they can go under. Something better will take their place.

I am not in favor of bailing out any industry. This is just the risk of doing business. I’m also not in favor of bailing out the government.
