US surgeon general: US cases are where Italy was 2 weeks ago

WASHINGTON - The U.S. surgeon general said Monday that the number of coronavirus cases in the United States has reached the level that Italy recorded two weeks ago, a sign that infections are expected to rise in America as the government steps up testing and financial markets continue to fall.

“We are at a critical inflection point in this country, people. We are where Italy was two weeks ago in terms of our numbers,” U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams told Fox News. “When you look at the projections, there’s every chance that we could be Italy.”

Two weeks ago, there were 1,700 cases of coronavirus in Italy and the country had reported 34 deaths. Now, Italy is reporting an estimated 25,000 cases and more than 1,800 people have died. There are about 3,800 cases reported in the United States and so far, more than 65 people have died from coronavirus.

Adams claims the U.S. has “turned the tide” on testing, a critical part of tracking and containing pandemics. The U.S. effort has been hobbled by a series of missteps, including flaws with the testing kits first distributed by the federal government and bureaucratic hurdles that held up testing by private laboratories.

Adams’ details about the capacity of roll-out of drive-through and walk-by testing sites, however, contradicted other administration officials.

Adams said there will be 30 to 40 new testing sites running in 19 states that could each perform 2,000 to 4,000 tests a week.

Trump needs to tell this Admiral to keep his mouth shut until statements like this are reviewed and approved by the White House.

Would it be better for each person to make one trip to the grocery store for the next two months or 16 trips to the store during those two months?

One thing is for sure, the information is uncertain enough to guarantee panic.

BINGO! Whoever is in charge of the messaging on this needs to be taken to the woodshed. The panic is there largely because people are not confident that they're being told the truth.

Younger and relatively healthy people have a low risk of serious illness. That is true. So they tell us to go about our daily business, only to turn around a week later and close all bars, restaurants, and cancel all gatherings of 50 or more. (that little nugget BTW dropped by the CDC after yesterday's briefing where they just said nonchalantly that "there will be new guidelines". Yeah, the new guidelines are basically to lock down the country).

The markets plunge this morning and then Trump sends out a cryptic tweet, God Bless the USA. To the marginally engaged average person out there this all looks really, really bad.

Trump desperately needs to get on top of panic control as much as virus control.

Plus they had at least a two week head start

one thing I keep hearing is that we’re learning so much from the experiences of China South Korea and Italy

Except that there is NO country on the planet that has anything even close to the infections rates in Italy.
Two weeks ago, Italy and South Korea had about the same numbers of infections.
Today, Italy has 25,000 infections, while South Korea has only 8,000 infections and have managed to essentially contain new infections.

The US population is 5-1/2 times the size of Italy.
Italy’s population is older.
The US has better healthcare.
The US has more acute care beds per 1000 than Italy
Italy has a denser population.

It also has the highest number of older people who are the prime target for the virus.

“Trump desperately needs to get on top of panic control as much as virus control. “

Agreed. This could very well cost him the presidency. Then we are really screwed.

Trump has invested a whole lot of faith into doctors here.

And he rightly should. But doctors are NOT public information professionals and they are NOT macroeconomists. IMHO a lot of the chaos is due to the fact that Pence’s task force is really, really heavy on doctors and lite everywhere else.

Get on TV several times per day with calm briefings to reassure people. Tell them no need to ransack Walmart like he did yesterday. THAT would really help. Not tweets that cause many people to say WTF. Some people see “God Bless the USA” as a call to prayer and patriotism. Others read that as “gawd, we’re f***ed”.

lol.....

We will know in 2-3 weeks if this is the real deal or media hype.

Back during the swine flu (about 60 million infected) I do not remember meeting one person who had that flu, we just went about our lives as if nothing was going on and gave no thought about it. The media did not hype that flu like this one. (I spent less time on the internet back then as I do now.) In the small, rural southern town I live in, it's business as usual this morning for everyone.

Either the coronavirus is more severe than the swine flu or the country has been lied to by the liberal media......again.

Chinese New Year was during the last week of January. How many of the about 300,000 Chinese who live and work in the heaviest hit part of Italy returned from visits to China with the virus? Italy is the country with the second oldest median age in the world. Italy has far fewer ICU units per population than the USA. Why do we compare ourselves with Italy when so many of our underlying statistics are so different?

Unless and until our government explains to us why this virus is qualitatively different from previous pandemics, I continue to believe that they are hiding something significant from us or we are destroying our economy unnecessarily.

Italy reported its first death on 2/21. 16 days later they reported 233 deaths.

The US reported it’s first death on 3/1. 16 days later we reported 70 deaths.

We aren’t Italy.

I worked in Public Health for 30 years. I have been watching the “cases per 1 million population” statistic carefully. The US number is much lower than almost any other nation’s. It will continue to rise, or course, with every new case, but it is going up slowly and is far behind almost everyone else in the world.

I think Trump’s move of shutting down most travel from China very early on will wind up being the savior of the United States.

Right. It shows that the US health system can keep very sick people alive longer. They still die - just not as soon.

The thing that has me curious is that there are strong Chinese communities in Boston, NY, and San (and other places in the country.). Out of these hundreds of thousands of people, none of them went home during Lunar New Year?

Why hasn’t then been “significant” hot spots there? Not because of any racial component—but because they were more likely to have travelled there.

We have the flight records...I wonder if they are being tracked and tested? Even just for research purposes.
