Our family doc in the 1960s was a nice old gentleman who had seen it all, and alcohol was definitely in his pharmacopeia (as was pine tar and other such homely things).
When I was a kid, you could still buy codeine-based cough syrups over the counter.
And if we kids had the flu or a cold, Mom would give us a shot of Blackberry Brandy and send us off to La-La Land.
