When I was a kid, you could still buy codeine-based cough syrups over the counter.
And if we kids had the flu or a cold, Mom would give us a shot of Blackberry Brandy and send us off to La-La Land.

Cherecol with codeine....it was still sold over the counter until the early 90’s. Only thing that seemed to work. Damn junkies ruined it.
Our cough syrup in those days was something doc had great faith in. All I remember about it was that it was clear (it was in a clear glass bottle as well), burned like crazy going down, and had a sort of turpentine or kerosene "whang" to it. One did not look forward to the stuff, but it apparently did the trick.
