China hints at denying America drugs

Now that the number of new people infected with the coronavirus in China is slowing, the country's Communist Party is ratcheting up threats against the West, with a particularly nasty warning about access to life-saving drugs aimed at the United States.

In an article in Xinhua, the state-run media agency that's largely considered the mouthpiece of the party, Beijing bragged about its handling of COVID-19, a virus that originated in Wuhan and has spread quickly around the world, killing nearly 5,000 people and infecting thousands more. The article also claimed that China could impose pharmaceutical export controls which would plunge America into "the mighty sea of coronavirus."

I agree cba123, totally. Basically, the damned Red Chinese don’t sell us much good. We get their cheap-made $11.98 crap that all the stores sell. They make it for 75 cents and all that they make goes to the Red China military machine. Every dime. We don’t need their crap. We can hire high school dropouts to make the same $11.98 crap here, but probably for $6.00. They are using kids to make the stuff, surely our drugged up, high on meth or coke heads, dropouts can make the cheep stuff.

So, Trump was prescient again trying to wean the USA off of Chinese suppliers.

Yep, he has a provable track record on this, he is positioned well and has positioned the country well - but will get little to no credit from the panic media.

Cheaper shipping from China as opposed to domestically is a real head scratcher. Our USPostal service needs to change this immediately. I wonder who the Americans are who benefit from this ridiculous disparity. Somehow I think Congress is involved.

That’s all he said at his presser when he was asked the very same question.

Trump can use EOs.

EOs have no authority over private industry.

Congress can write legislation.

To do what? Require the pharmaceutical and medical supply companies to manufacture all their stuff here? It would take years to accomplish and who is going to pay for it? Drug prices are already high; what will doubling or tripling the costs do?

And if Fedzilla refuses to get off the pot, the American public can boycott Chinese products.

Good luck with that one. Besides, if the only source for your medication is China then how are you going to protest that? Die?

You contradict yourself...

Not really, no.

...what the government can do about it is make those things illegal (or legally restricted).

The government is going to outlaw pharmaceuticals and medical supplies? Rely? We can't get them to rein in H-1Bs, you really think their going to cut off drugs and medicals supplies?

Back in the 70s the Arabs tried this with oil which caused us a lot of temporary grief.

In the end however the Arabs permanently lost about a third of their market out right because of new exploration and conservation. Now their terrorism has lost much more than that due to fracking tech.

Come on China! Do it!

We grow weary of your 3rd world childishness.

Outsourcing jobs, manufacturing overseas, they all do it and none of it is illegal. And there's nothing the government can do about it.

You contradict yourself - what the government can do about it is make those things illegal (or legally restricted).

The government is going to outlaw pharmaceuticals and medical supplies?

Clumsy deception - as the context you omitted makes clear, "these things" are the outsourcing jobs and manufacturing overseas that you were discussing.

And there's nothing the government can do about it.

The government is exactly what caused business to go overseas. I agree with you that companies will go and do what will make them the most money. Government through taxation, regulation, bad trade agreements and Union support, made it more profitable to go overseas.

The government could just as well make it favorable to come back by reducing the burden of all those things mentioned.

You spelled "firing squads for 20,000 - 40,000 executives, finance officers, and lawyers, and strip their families of citizenship and send them to Qom or Wuhan" wrong, didn't you?

You spelled "immediate expulsion of EVERY Chinese student from the US" wrong, didn't you?

I believe it is part of some international convention that gives supposedly third-world countries a massive advantage.

Even beyond the disadvantage to mere Americans, it is an economic disaster of a policy, as freight shipping is one of the biggest polluters on the planet and we in effect subsidize it.

Yes—libs ought to go for the greener solution!

IF this comes to fruition, the companies that moved their production there to partner with the ChiComs should be held accountable. Release the Attoneys!

When Rx ear drop from China cost $50 with insurance just how much did I "save" because Chinese labor was used instead of New Jersey labor? .000000000001 cents?

Yeah, we are being played and used.

Time for that Marshall Plan to build, rebuild, retool and get Big Pharma ALL production back on American soil...

All it would take is a tariff, no legislation or action needed. Just set the tariff really high ON ALL IMPORTS FROM ALL COUNTRIES and get out of the way. Leave the tax payer out of it.

How could they have legally prevented it?

How? A really HIGH TARIFF. That's how.
