Bail reform forces release of LaFayette man tied to 16 thefts - including Mercedes Benz heist

An Onondaga County judge Thursday said he had no choice but to release a LaFayette man with mental issues who has been linked to at least 16 separate theft investigations.

That’s because Christopher Brown, 20, hasn’t been charged with a crime eligible for bail under the state’s recent reform law.

His worst charge? Stealing a Mercedes Benz last July from a James Street apartment garage, according to the indictment. He’s also accused of stealing a Honda SUV from the same garage, as well as ATVs, a purse and credit cards in separate incidents.

His charges include burglary and grand larceny.

Without violence, none of the charges can keep Brown locked up before trial. He’s never been charged with a weapon or confronting a victim.

But even Brown’s own lawyer isn’t so sure his client can stay out of trouble. “We have all of our appendages crossed,” defense lawyer John Sharon said after court.

Declare him mentally incompetent and hold him until he is sane again (yeah).

Re the Mercedes, for a crazy guy, he has good taste.

As for the crazy pro-criminal release law and New York State:

This Judge can’t speak truth to power as a matter of Social Justice for the victims?

Have the bailiff give the perp the address of the Judge's wheels [both at work and at home] and a valet key.

Say what? According to the list posted on another thread, there are plenty of violent offenses that have had bail removed, including degrees of manslaughter.

We should stand out side the courthouse and give these skells a list with the home addresses of the politicians who voted for “bail reform”.

Should also include a reminder to the criminals that they should personally thank the politicians, who are probably waiting at their homes to greet them.
