The MSNBC host and the New York Times Mara Gay praised a tweet with a startling and incorrect claim.
MSNBCs Brian Williams plus bad math equaled an embarrassing on-air goof Thursday. (See the clip below.)
The 11th Hour host gushed over a tweet claiming that Michael Bloomberg could have used the $500 million ad budget on his failed presidential bid to give every American $1 million.
Its an incredible way of putting it, Williams declared.
Its true, guest and New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay chimed in. Its disturbing.
It was also wrong.
Get your calculators out, America. Heres the now-deleted tweet from writer Mekita Rivas that Gay brought up and Williams validated:
Bloomberg spent $500 million on ads. The U.S. population is 327 million. He could have given each American $1 million and still have money left over. I feel like a $1 million check would be life-changing for most people. Yet he wasted it all on ads and STILL LOST.
Some quick number-punching reveals that $500 million divided by 327 million equates to a rounded-up $1.53 per person, a bit off from $1 million.
Rivas owned up to the flub, writing, I know, Im bad at math, on a Twitter bio.

Greatest tool ever! Brian Williams obviously never used a framing square. Comes in handy to cut staircase supports when you need to figure rise and run cuts. Carpenters are fantastic with math.
ROFL!!!!!
Well that was their cut! :)
nobody’s held back from making a lot of $$ in this country.
Like that line from Citizen Kane “”Well, it’s no trick to make a lot of money. if all you want to do is make a lot of money”
Idiots...seriously.
Um, no. Check your math.
This is Third Grade arithmetic. In your post, the ms cancel out.
y’all think too highly of yourselves.
As usual, everybody is wrong here except me.
Bloomberg spent $500 million. The population of the U.S. is 327 million. Now, give means the same thing as add. So Bloomberg could have given every American 827 million dollars.
My math professors in college:
Sorry I said 87 5/8. Should be 82 5/8. You can lay out stair risers with a framing square. Old carpenters are pretty sharp. Cabinet making is an art form. Its the little marks on the ruler that screw you up but buildings stay we just pass along. You pay for the carpenters tools, you just rent his brain. Trumps a builder the rest are occupiers. I M H O.
For $500 billion.
1 billion = 1000 million, so each person could get around $(5/3.5) thousand say around $1500.
It’s those Trillionaires who are the problem...
I’m only here to help....
Absolutely true, another reason why I respect Donald Trump. Carpentry is a hobby of mine, I built the cabinets in my kitchen when I remodeled it. Also did furniture for my daughters. But wouldn't consider building a home (a couple relatives are carpenters that do that), let alone imagine building a tower like Donald Trump has done. Brian Williams and leftists mock President Trump, but are clueless about actually building anything with their hands unless it's making a pile of sh*t.
Rivas is not only bad at math, but dumb as a rock.
Me either. They whacked me like I was a piñata.
NPCs?
I hear you. Sister Rita James used my head like a speed bag.
Quod Erat Demonstrandum.
You would need 327 quadrillion dollars to give everyone in America a million dollars. That’s a lot of dough. I don’t think there’s enough paper and ink to print that up.
Sister Margarita and Sister Anina. I swear some of them were sadists. But some of them were very good teachers.
