The MSNBC host and the New York Times Mara Gay praised a tweet with a startling and incorrect claim.
MSNBCs Brian Williams plus bad math equaled an embarrassing on-air goof Thursday. (See the clip below.)
The 11th Hour host gushed over a tweet claiming that Michael Bloomberg could have used the $500 million ad budget on his failed presidential bid to give every American $1 million.
Its an incredible way of putting it, Williams declared.
Its true, guest and New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay chimed in. Its disturbing.
It was also wrong.
Get your calculators out, America. Heres the now-deleted tweet from writer Mekita Rivas that Gay brought up and Williams validated:
Bloomberg spent $500 million on ads. The U.S. population is 327 million. He could have given each American $1 million and still have money left over. I feel like a $1 million check would be life-changing for most people. Yet he wasted it all on ads and STILL LOST.
Some quick number-punching reveals that $500 million divided by 327 million equates to a rounded-up $1.53 per person, a bit off from $1 million.
Rivas owned up to the flub, writing, I know, Im bad at math, on a Twitter bio.

“Scientific” notation uses exponents - ones, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, etc. It’s too much work.
“Engineering” notation goes three powers at a time. Ones, thousands, millions, billions. It is much easier to use, and keeps all the “front” numbers between 1 and 999.
A million is two steps. So if you’re starting with 327 million people, you go to billions, then trillions.
327 trillion dollars.
I’m going to go and sit at the back of the class. Grabbing the dunce cap on the way..
Someone show me what was wrong with his math.
I see 500m/327m= 1.53m. I don’t see how it can only be one hundred and fifty three cents.
You can be horrible at math and still be good at common arithmetic.
“I see 500m/327m= 1.53m. I dont see how it can only be one hundred and fifty three cents.”
Try it this way => 500,000,000/327,000,000 = ___?
This is what depressed me. A dollar and 53 cents wont buy a short beer much less a new fishing boat. Bloomberg is a cheap SOB and a has been midget. Brian Williams is an idiot. Im still gonna fish off the bank. They can kiss my bait bucket. :)
I think that's trillion.
Calculator needed for that math? If you can't do that math, can you be expected to even be able to turn a calculator on much less operate the buttons and pick the division key rather than the addition key?
This is why liberals believe free-everything is affordable and believe anything a so called 'scientist' is claimed to have said is truth.
They can not render granular facts mixed with simple formulation into truths. They are entirely unburdened by a critical process of analysis. If the cow 10 cows down the line says 'moo', then, well, 'moo,' and that's all there is to it, so long as that cow uses the lefty unconscious buzzwords and sing songy up-at-the-end-of-a-sentence voice, and especially if the cow has a speech impediment and is on NPR.
This is why what passes for us as propaganda and gossip is revealed truth to the lefties. The right cow moo'd it - that's science if you belong to the leftarted herd.
What the hell is up with Whoopies hair OMG it looks like a string mop, what the hell is that???
LOL, I don’t feel bad about it...I still don’t get it.
No matter how many zero’s I use, the answer is always 1.53.
500/327= 1.5290
5000/3270= 1.5290
Then there’s 500m-327m= 173.
173 would have been the amount left over.
173/327= 0.5290
Think of it this way: He's got 500 million. How many people can he give 500 million to?
Simple subtraction: 500,000,000 minus 327,000,000 equals 173,000,000. The statement is factually correct.
$500,000,000,000/327,000,000 Americans = $1,529/American
$327,000,000,000,000/327,000,000,000 Americans = $1,000,000/American
Me.
Williams is dumb as a stump.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4IQjUpTNVU
He said each person would receive 1M.
So he can give 327 people 1M and have some left over for himself.
I always think she has leprosy.
Sounds like me in grammar school. Man, those nuns had no patience with me.
On his Wikipedia page, it says he was never conferred a college degree.
No, it isnt. To give each of the 327 million Americans a million dollars would require handing out 327 million x a million dollars. Thats 327 million million dollars.
