The number of people in Italy who have died since contracting the new coronavirus has risen to 79, according to the latest official data.
Some 400 new cases were reported on Tuesday evening, bringing the total number of people in Italy confirmed to have contracted the virus since the beginning of the outbreak to 2,502.
Of these 160 have recovered and 79 have died, leaving Italy with 2,263 active cases, according to official figures from the Italian Health Ministry and Civil Protection department.
That means another 27 people passed away since Monday, while 11 were given the all-clear.
More than 25,800 people have now been tested in Italy for the Covid-19 virus, with around 10 percent of tests coming back positive.
Some 1,000 people found to be infected have only mild symptoms and are in self-isolation at home.
Meanwhile 1,034 are receiving treatment in hospital, while another 229 are in intensive care.
While 80 percent of all coronavirus cases are mild and result in full recovery, the symptoms can be life-threatening for elderly people and those with pre-existing health problems.
The majority of fatalities in Italy were in this high-risk category.

Are these people dropping dead in the streets like they do in China?
Italy, sadly, is full of old folks. So none of this is a surprise. They should call this the Boomer Early-Exit Plague.
This thing seems more lethal in some countries than others..why?
Wonder if these people got it mostly from traveling elsewhere or if it “came to them”?
Maybe Italians should put down the cigarettes. Just saying that after age, smoking is the obvious co-morbid factor...
As others have posted - Italy has a high proportion of elderly. They are the most in danger from such illnesses.
[Are these people dropping dead in the streets like they do in China?]
Well at least this article highlights that those that died were in high risk categories. That is progress. I think we can slow down the panic if we just get people to realize this is primarily a serious issue only for elderly and immuno-compromised individuals.

I suspect more than one variable applies. For example, in the US so far, a high percent of infected persons have died. However, most were older and in a nursing home environment - but if you were just looking at fatality percentage you’d get 30% or above. Not a microcosm of US society at large.
“My suspicion is that those videos were of people suffering from heart attack or stroke.”

Yeah, most such videos had no attribution or source date. Not reliable in and of themselves.
Smokers.
Italy is full of smokers, like China.
“This thing seems more lethal in some countries than others..why?”
Probably due to the premise that all country in the world are reporting in a 100% open and honest way.
It says the MAJORITY of deaths were in high risk categories.
Several of the new cases in the US have their origins from people who had been in Italy.

Chinese death rates are probably the tip of the iceberg and low compared to what non-Chinese death rates will be, as were now seeing from death rates in Italy and Iran. At the same time, I think the Chinese response is overwrought. It hasnt done that much damage in China, relative to the flu (dont know if the Chinese even keep flu death statistics).
Heres a clue as to the impact of viruses originating in China on China itself vs outside of China:
Ultimately, its not a racial distinction. Its a distinction between consumers and non-consumers of exotic game. Chinese have a several thousand year tradition of eating exotic animals, something that they apparently share with Vietnamese. Koreans and Japanese do not. Nor, to my knowledge, do most other nationalities in the world, with the exception of people in sub-Saharan African, who have a fondness for bush meat of just about every type. In China and Vietnam, its partly to do with the role of exotic game in TCM (traditional Chinese medicine):

I am guessing the virus was brought by the many tourists.
I think that it will prove to be just as lethal here in the USA.
People are just kidding themselves otherwise.

I’m guessing that there’s maybe a few younger and otherwise healthy people that might suggest they’re not enjoying their dance with COVID-19 all that much. And even the ones that aren’t hospitalized or bed-ridden by it are still carriers.
