Desperate to avoid coming down with a winter cold or worse, plenty of us will be dosing up on vitamin C supplements and doctors in China are even looking into its effectiveness against coronavirus.
Research into new and exciting uses such as battling sepsis and memory loss is also under way.
We spend more than £880 million on vitamin C supplements globally, with that figure expected to top £1.1 billion by 2024.
Its popularity is rooted in the belief that vitamin C can prevent colds a theory first set out in 1970 by Nobel Prize-winning scientist Linus Pauling. He was convinced of its benefits and personally took 3g a day, although much of his research on the vitamin was later discredited.
Certainly, when it comes to infections or a virus such as flu, it is accepted that vitamin C is part of the immune response and quickly becomes depleted. It helps by encouraging the production of white blood cells that fight disease, attaching themselves to, and killing, invading microbes.
However, multiple studies have failed to back up Paulings theory of vitamin C as a preventative supplement and, according to a 2017 report by the authoritative review board the Cochrane Collaboration, the best we can hope from taking a well above average daily 1,000mg of vitamin C is shortening the length of a cold by 8 per cent about 0.4 days.
Higher doses than this have been found to shorten colds further research from the University of Helsinki in 2017 found that daily doses of 6g to 8g could shorten symptoms of a cold by 19 per cent. But in the general population, vitamin C was not found to have any preventative effect.

The vitamin C thats now all made in China?
Hopefully, you are sufficiently stocked up, by now.
I notice they are coming out with 25% less sugar OJ than the regular OJ that has a huge amount of sugar.
I eat 3-4 clementines in the morning with coffee. Between that and working on a ranch with little contact with people I haven’t been sick since 2016.
Dr Robert Cathcart recommended vitamin C doses to levels of bowel intolerance titration.
I also heard housing to take zinc supplements.
I live in Arizona. The hot part. Never get sick. I have over 1100 hrs of sick time on the books - Don’t care, cause I’ll never use it. I’d retire before that.
Also, I have Orange Trees and squeeze my own juice for me and my kids and wife. I can produce a quart per day for a couple of months. Then, it’s on to the store bought stuff, or our multitude of neighbors giving it away.
Never sick.
I can’t eat enough veggies (or other food) to get enough vitamin C...I am starting to believe the increase in Vit C I’ve taken this past year is why my Hashimotos numbers dropped by half...my Naturapath said...”what ever you’re doing...keep doing it.”
Do tell...from what company?
I don’t know if it can or cannot, but on reading the headline, I ran to the kitchen and downed a quick glass of OJ. Doesn’t hurt to get a little vitamin C in the system regardless.
Someone suggested to me that my MUSA liposomal C is really likely only put together in USA...FWIW

Both!
Zicam works great. In my case, it will end a cold in 2-3 days, but it will come back in two weeks again lightly. I forget and run out of the zinc or get tired of the loss of taste. If I don’t forget it is as close to a cure as I can think of.
Hi, I was curious what the Cadillac of Vitamin C is?
Colloidal
Silver
Also works. Kills all viruses and bacteria.
Silver is in 20000 plus medical products
Its mandatory in all hospital HVACR filters
Among other vitamins mentioned earlier by others, I take on average 15-20,000mg of Vitamin C per day. I may skip 1-2 days a week. I use Pharmaceutical Grade Vitamin C crystals. I mixed them in with warm water and let it dissolve. I use powder because it would take too many pills for the same dosage, lol.
The two occasions I caught a bad bug, I took a regimen of 20,000 mg every 2-4 hours. I have taken up to 160,000mg in a 24 hour period. Whatever bug I had was knocked out within 48 hours. No Antibiotics in over 20 years.
The body will tell you when it has absorbed all the Vitamin C it needs; it will "flush" any excess.
My aunt was a pediatrician. Very famous in her own right. She pretty much subscribed to Pauling’s ideas about vit C.
Interesting. I dont subscribe to the theory that research must come from places like Harvard to believable.
Drs can claim all they want that Vitamin C doesnt help with sepsis..but if i get it i want vitamin C
