There are fewer registered Republicans than independents for the first time ever

There are now more registered independents than Republicans, marking a first for the U.S.

According to data from Ballot Access News, independents make up 29.09 percent of registered voters, while Republicans make up 28.87 percent and Democrats make up 39.66 percent. The data comes from the 31 states that require registration by party.

An analysis by The Washington Post, which first reported the data, notes that there hasn't been a large drop in GOP registration since President Trump was elected, meaning he's likely not linked to the change. The growth of independents is more likely part of a broader trend since voter registration began in the 1900s.

In 2004, Democrats made up 42.19 percent of the vote, Republicans made up 32.79 percent of the vote and independents made up 23.15 percent of the vote. The number of independents has been growing since, while the number of Democrats and Republicans has slowly declined.

Democrats did see a boost in 2008 when former President Obama was elected, hitting a peak of 43.62 percent of registered voters. But by 2016, the percent of registered Democrats had declined to 40.6 percent.

I’ve been independent for many years because the GOP did not represent me.

I wanted a party that sided with the citizens and the rule of law against illegal aliens and they refused.

Trump is an anomaly, most of the elected GOP are still committed to the fundamental transformation of our country into North Mexico.

McCain was a ‘Maverick’
Romney proudly stood with Democrats in their witchhunt of Trump

They weren’t Republicans.

Never were.

Neither was Bloomberg.

Neither was David Duke.

Bruce Jenner is not a woman.

And Epstein did not kill himself.

I am expecting to become a registered Democrat this election so I can vote for Bernie Sanders.

There might be more Republicans and less Independents if it weren’t for the likes if Turtle Head, Grahamnesty, Pierre Delecto, and many others.

I am referring to national party registration numbers like those announced in the article. Those are meaningless, voter registration laws vary by state. There are at least 20 states without party registration. Those states are largely in the south and Midwest.

So any “national” numbers of voters’ party registration really only represent about half of the country, and a disproportionately Democrat half at that.

Personally, my voter registration card is labeled “Republican”
...…………………………………………………………………………………………………

TexasGurl24 correctly states in her post that Texas doesn’t register voters by party. Are you still in Texas?

Man oh man!! TexasGurl24 is correct! I looked closely at my registration card and it does NOT say Republican on it. I do stand corrected!

Yes, I do live in Texas 22nd Congressional District and have for several decades!

A return to the norm, they hope and will probably get.
If so it will be without me

In many states you can not register as independent. In New Jersey it is R, D or unaffiliated.
