A woman in Japan tested positive for the coronavirus for the second time on Wednesday, as the country grips with 190 cases separate from the Diamond Princess cruise ship outbreak, according to multiple reports.
The tour bus guide in her 40s first tested positive in late January and was released from the hospital after recovering. She was readmitted after having a sore throat and chest pains, according to the local government.
It's a first known case of a second positive test in Japan, which prompted Health Minister Katsunobu Kato to inform Japan's central government of the need to review previous patient lists and monitor the condition of those previously discharged, according to Reuters.
Once you have the infection, it could remain dormant and with minimal symptoms, and then you can get an exacerbation if it finds its way into the lungs, said Philip Tierno Jr., professor of microbiology and pathology at NYU School of Medicine, according to the news organization.
The virus can reportedly spread without symptoms showing up, which forces officials to play catch up and makes it far more difficult to manage.
Health officials analyzed the implications of a patient testing positive after having an initial recovery. Second positive tests have been reported in China.
Im not certain that this is not bi-phasic, like anthrax, Tierno Jr. said in regards to the disease being able to go away before reappearing.
With the 2020 Summer Olympic games scheduled in July, Toyko has urged large gatherings of people to be stopped or limited over the next two weeks to contain the virus, according to Reuters.
The Olympics should be postponed if this continues ... There are many people who dont understand how easy it is to spread this infection from one person to another," Tierno Jr. said

Coronavirus Prompts Saudi Arabia To Limit Travel To Holy Sites Months Ahead Of Hajj Pilgrimage
Some viruses seem to do this. I think it was a feature of the Spanish Flu too.
Ah yes, the Hajj — when Muslims from all over the world travel to Mecca, spend a week crowded in close proximity, and then return to where they came from.
Joy.
This happens 72.6% of the time with the common flu. Move along.
I was just commenting that it wasnt unusual; the Spanish flu happened to be a big viral outbreak so more of the sequelae are known. I was attacked yesterday for criticizing the panic and hysteria on this site, btw, because I think you just have to keep an eye on the current virus situation, be reasonably cautious and then go on with your life. Were all gonna die is actually true, but certainly not from this one virus.
do they know enough the virus to know when you are totally recovered?
Yep - the general population couldn’t fit in the areas where we have the 15 or so cases - and most would have to travel many hours to approach them..seems we have a lot of fatalists who seem to need a disaster in order to be able to cope with themselves.
Absolutely! and than you for adding nothing to a discussion you know absolutely nothing about!
Biphasic is bad enough. An actual re-infection is even worse.Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Agreed. Stay alert, prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and don’t panic...
Wise words from Douglas Adams and Null_And_Void!
Hell, Im a retired doctor and I dont know what to make of this. I cant recall an infection that doesnt produce some immune response. Off the top of my head. Maybe someone else can.
I take it back, AIDS not only fails to mount an immune response it attacks the immune system. So theres that.
HIV insertion is more like it.
Thank you for this. Among other things I'm an RN with a background in the pharmaceutical industry and what we're experiencing is new, even for the folks who seem to know so much about it :) It's an individual choice how someone chooses to prepare, or nor prepare for disruptions in the supply chain or a potential illness. As usual, the hysteria is coming from the least knowledgeable and most opinionated.
Hmmmm. HIV mutation or HIV-like mechanism engineered in?
This will also put a crimp in the political campaigning here. The rallies and public appearances.
