New visa rules set off ‘panic wave’ in immigrant communities

After nearly a dozen years moving through the U.S. visa system, Sai Kyaw’s brother and sister and their families were at the finish line: a final interview before they could leave Myanmar to join him in Massachusetts and work at his restaurant.

Then a dramatic turn in U.S. immigration policy halted their plans. The interview was postponed, and it’s not clear when, or whether, it will be rescheduled.

“It’s terrible,” Kyaw said. “There’s nothing we can really do except pray. They’ve been waiting 12 years. If they have to wait another 12 years, they will.”

His is just one of many stories of confusion, sorrow and outrage spreading across some immigrant communities after the announcement of a Trump administration policy that is expected to all but shut down family-based immigration from Myanmar, also known as Burma, as well as Nigeria, Kyrgyzstan and Eritrea. The policy also restricts visas from Sudan and Tanzania.

In signing a proclamation last month that takes effect Friday, President Donald Trump said those countries failed to meet minimum security standards. It was his latest crackdown on his signature issue of immigration.

Unlike previous travel bans, the new rules are narrower. They halt immigrant visas from Nigeria, Eritrea, Myanmar and Kyrgystan, covering people who want to live in the U.S. permanently and are sponsored by family members or employers. They also eliminate participation in a visa lottery program in which a computer randomly selects up to 55,000 people for visas from underrepresented countries. Sudan and Tanzania will also be barred from the lottery.

The ban does not affect immigrants traveling to the U.S. for a temporary stay, including tourists and students, or immigrants already in the U.S. There are exceptions, including dual citizenship holders.

Is it setting off panic in legal or illegal immigrant communities? The commie Dems don’t make a difference between the two, I do.

a final interview before they could leave Myanmar to join him in Massachusetts and work at his restaurant.

Where they won’t pay taxes.

Won’t pay FICA or Social Security.

Thus showing no income, they will claim welfare when its allowed

and likely being in a blue city (like mine) where local government coordinates with groups like Catholic Charities - they may be given free-housing (which they will rent to others), signed up for food-stamps, and special immersion programs at the public school.

What we need in the U. S. is a lot more people who don't know or care to
know our culture, barely speak the language and don't particularly want
to, don't grasp the dangers of Communism, and think only of what they
can get out of the U. S., without showing one speck of loyalty.

Please, can we have 15 million more of these? /s

Between the illegals and these sorts of immigrants, my region is sure
a lot more fun. /s

I can be reunited with my family in Japan anytime I wish for the price of an airline ticket (a little over $1000 if you plan it well). I just can't permanently settle there unless I wish to qualify for an actual residence visa as I did once in a previous life.

It is time the world gets over the idea that the United States can be the flophouse for anybody who has family here, regardless of their ability to contribute and/or support themselves here.

Pretty good guess. Mine is that these governments are so corrupt that it's easy to bribe your way past any required vetting. Perhaps even passports are for sale to non-citizens.

I don’t know. We have a large community of Burmese immigrants on my side of town here in Indy and they have been good neighbors. They have a strong Asian work ethic - I don’t know any who don’t have jobs. They keep up their property and are not a source of crime. I have met and interacted with many. One thing, not a singe one I have met uses anything but the word Burma to call their home country. None consider themselves from “Myanmar” - although some obviously come to America after the country changed it’s name.

I didn’t say they were lazy or common criminals - they just know how to work the system, scam government, and maximize everything the blue-state leftist bureaucracy provides - whether needed or not.

I think there are groups that have large subsets of the lazy and criminal, including a desire to manipulate the system and mooch off of it. It’s why we need the wall. I’m just saying Burmese are not one of those groups. They are the kind of immigrants we want. (In the right measure)
