SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WGEM) A Senate bill in Illinois would ban the use or sale of gas-powered leaf blowers in the state.
Illinois Senator Laura Fine (D) SB3313 filed last week by Senator Laura Fine (D) of the 9th Senate District amends the Environmental Protection Act. It states that "a person may not operate or sell at retail a gas-powered leaf blower in the State. Provides that a person who violates the amendatory Act's provisions shall be subject to a civil penalty not to exceed $500."
The bill lists environmental and noise pollution as the reasons for the ban.
It states that two-stroke and four-stroke engines used in gas-powered leaf blowers emit exceedingly high rates of pollutants, including carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, and hydrocarbons.
These emissions, the bill states, are a contributing factor to smog formation and acid rain.
The bill also claims that leaf blowers generate noise at a decibel level capable of causing hearing loss in a short amount of time.
In addition, it states that leaf blowers send dust and other small particles like metals, allergens, and animal feces into the air for considerable distances.
If signed into law, the bill would make use or sale of a gas-powered leaf blower illegal in the state of Illinois as of January 1, 2022.
Violators of the law would be subject to a fine up to $500.
Illinois also wants to make pumping your own gas illegal. So some state licensed/union employee will now determine whether you get gas or not.
Its illegal in NJ. And Im my township in NY
Suits me. I hate pumping gas.
All the “leaf blowers bother me”, so “i’m for banning it” posts are a big problem here. Sounds like half the folks posting here are for Democracy. With a big D.
If most folks want leaf blowers banned, where is the protection for the minority of folks that want to keep them. Use them. Protect their investment in them.
Protection of a minority’s property rights is Republicanism.
A previous poster asked “what’s next?”
The Illinois House has a bill in their Rules Committee that “Creates the Gas Station Attendant Act. Provides that no gas may be pumped at a gas station in this State unless it is pumped by a gas station attendant employed at the gas station. Effective January 1, 2021.” I understand this is to create jobs. It is sponsored by a Chicago representative, Camille Y Lily.
I live in the country so anybody with a gas tool is doing something useful. But I work close to DC and they hire Mexicans year round to blow nothing. I have seen guys literally blowing a single leaf. Of course they are picking up some invisible dust and dried feces too but that just lands nearby.
I recommend we ban Mexicans.
Thats rrrracist! Theyre Mexican ghostbusters.
These all accomplish somehing.
Leaf blowers assault the air and ears. I ask again....what do they accomplish ?
The noise stops and the dust settles.
Might ought to ban gas lawn mowers, gas trimmers and chain saws too.
First mower I used as a kid was an old reel mower you pushed, not fast but kept sharp and they cut nicely. We used clippers for edging and brooms for cleaning up the mess.

They’ll worry about lawn equipment but not say a word about Motorcycles or recreational vehicles. Put the same emission controls on all motors and it would be a whole new world.
Exactly. T Leaf Blower Owners (LBO) have no need for them. We can collectively determine that since there is no legitimate need, we can ban them. Leaf Blower Owners (LBO) gas blowers look mean too.. like they could be used as a means of assault. I'm especially wary of the High Powered leaf blowers. All they are used for is blowing leaves and feces.
Because God knows Illinois has no more pressing issues facing them for the legislature to deal with.
What about these gas powered vacuums that blow leaves into a truck that takes them to a facility to compost them into leaf humus?
Do you still use them? How old are you? Good luck finding somebody to mow your yard if you have any disabilities. It's hard to believe that we really have this many "I don't like it so you shouldn't either..." and "I did it this way so you should too..." people around here. Makes me wonder where they come from.
The noise stops and the dust settles.
...
The same is true for nuclear bombs.
Sometimes its not. Lol.
Sometimes its not. Lol.
Illinois is 5 or 6 times larger than New Jersey, with many rural farming communities. Not surprised somebody from NJ/NY would fail to grasp this (like the idiot Bloomberg) and also not surprised you would think that just because you hate something, the whole world should submit to laws just to protect your delicate nature.
I’m going to go way out on a limb and guess that you support the elimination of the electoral college as well.
Can’t have middle America living free while folks in New Jersey and New York have to live in their giant self induced sh#t holes.
Around here the noisemakers do NOT bag the debris.
It is blown down the street. I have even seen the rascals doing the yardwork at the condos nearby blow the crap into the storm sewer. Get that stuff wet in the sewer line and it is potential dam.
Again, ban gasoline powered leaf blowers.
Did I say it shouldve illegal?
No. Calling people idiots?
Full. Self.
Whats wrong with that? I will pay to have someone pump gas.
