SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WGEM) — A Senate bill in Illinois would ban the use or sale of gas-powered leaf blowers in the state.
Illinois Senator Laura Fine (D) SB3313 filed last week by Senator Laura Fine (D) of the 9th Senate District amends the Environmental Protection Act. It states that "a person may not operate or sell at retail a gas-powered leaf blower in the State. Provides that a person who violates the amendatory Act's provisions shall be subject to a civil penalty not to exceed $500."
The bill lists environmental and noise pollution as the reasons for the ban.
It states that two-stroke and four-stroke engines used in gas-powered leaf blowers emit exceedingly high rates of pollutants, including carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, and hydrocarbons.
These emissions, the bill states, are a contributing factor to smog formation and acid rain.
The bill also claims that leaf blowers generate noise at a decibel level capable of causing hearing loss in a short amount of time.
In addition, it states that leaf blowers send dust and other small particles like metals, allergens, and animal feces into the air for considerable distances.
If signed into law, the bill would make use or sale of a gas-powered leaf blower illegal in the state of Illinois as of January 1, 2022.
Violators of the law would be subject to a fine up to $500.
Obnoxiously noisy machines ....that don’t accomplish ANYTHING.
Mixed feelings. I HATE gooberment involvement but it’s EVERY SINGLE DAY in my ‘hood. Army of Mexicans blowing crap one way one day, blowing it back the next. The Tuesday a-hole has apparently removed the muffler on his screaming leaf blower, making it roughly louder than a fighter jet with after-burner full blast. Can’t even get a break on Sunday. What happened to rake, broom, dustpan? I dunno...gas powered garden tools make it impossible to have a nice, quiet neighborhood.
Maybe a better solution it so have everyone’s gardener a-hole all show up on the same day. Monday on our block, Tuesday the next block.
Even the across the street middle school gardeners show up at 6:15 AM and start making noise. The city ordinance says 7:00 is the earliest, but the school is apparently immune.

The electric leaf blowers make just as much noise and will fling turds with the best of them.
They say a butterfly flapping its wings in Africa causes a hurricane. I often regret the horrific damage I cause on the other side of the globe when I leaf blow. But, I do it anyway. /uglyAmerican

Really? What “blue state” hive do you live in? Please STAY THERE and soil your own nest. Leave us in the FREE STATES alone. I will own and use as many gasoline-powered appliances as I please.
Please stay on your side of the blue-state fence, and leave the rest of us alone. We will keep our LEAF BLOWERS and CHAIN SAWS.
