China could effectively shut down America’s healthcare system within months given the one-party state’s “global chokehold” on the manufacturing of medicines and medical supplies, explained Rosemary Gibson, author of China Rx: Exposing the Risks of America’s Dependence on China for Medicine.
Mansour noted how the coronavirus outbreak in China has exposed America’s dangerous dependence on Chinese production of pharmaceutical and medical supplies, including an estimated 97 percent of all antibiotics and 80 percent of the active pharmaceutical ingredients needed for domestic drug production.
Gibson said, “If China shuts the door on exports of medicines and the ingredients to make them, within a couple of months our pharmacies would be empty. Our healthcare system would cease to function. That’s how dependent we are.”
“Another shocking thing I discovered is that India and its huge generic [drug] industry — they’re the top generic producer in the world, although I think China’s going to overtake them in about five to ten years — even India depends on China,” Gibson stated.” [India’s] generic industry would shut down within weeks and months without those core components, and you see it in the Indian press, right now, that they’re already concerned about this because this coronavirus in China is really disrupting supply chains.”
China uses predatory mercantilist policies — including dumping — to undercut American and Western drug manufacturers, just as the communist state did with steel and other commodities, noted Mansour.
Eighty-five percent of the America’s strategic national stockpile of medicines and medical supplies depends on China, Gibson noted.
Gibson concluded, “We have to diversify away from China and bring some manufacturing of essential medicines back home to this country.

Regardless of China’s intentions, they’re doing it by default, at this point, since they’ve been shutdown for 2 weeks past their normal Lunar New Year, and likely months away from getting back to ‘normal’.
That seems like a national security issue of great magnitude.

Why can’t we get the drugs from Canada or India until we can set up the labs ourselves here in the US!! This is a GREAT learning experience for US companies doing business over there MAYBE they will come home!!! NIKE can just stay there and ROT!!!
China had the world market in rare earth minerals sewed up tight. That is, until they decided to use the monopoly as a political weapon. Shortly, the US will overtake China as the world’s largest supplier. All, while using the cleanest most environmentally friendly production methods available.
The Arab countries in the middle east had the a near monopoly on oil, that is, until they decided to use it as a political weapon. Last year, the United States surpassed Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest producer. Also, America’s dependence on oil has been steadily reducing since 1973.
I don’t think it will be necessary for the Chinese to try to use medical supplies as a political weapon. I suspect the entire world is now aware of the danger and by this time next year the Chinese monopoly will be broken. This is one thing I love about Trump and hated about Obama. Trump sees the danger to America and takes action. Obama lauded America’s enemies and took no effective action, on anything.

The downside risks of our dependence on China with its opaque and vulnerable supply chains is astronomical
Our Political and managerial classes have much to answer for with their irresponsible and reckless policies. Guarantee that there are some people who are sweating this virus scare right now.
Hope we dont face a worse case scenario, but shareholders and voters need to really put pressure on management and politicians to do a basic rethink of strategic manufacturing policy and bringing back critical manufacturing to the US.
Average person has no idea how bad things have gotten and what the risks are to America. No matter how bad you think things are- they are worse.

Right now, in many areas JITD has crashed and burned re their stocking of Hand Sanitizer with alcohol.
Pharmacies in our home city were out of stock and probably still out of any size bottle of Hand Sanitizer. Walmart had 3 three ounce bottles earlier this week/Tuesday. I bought 2 of them.

Do not let your Rx and critical OTC drugs get below a 2-3 week supply.
Our health plan’s online pharmacy went to allowing a 90-100 day/3 month supply of most rx drugs about 2+ years ago. Most rx drugs can be ordered for the next 90 day about 4-5 weeks before your supply runs out.

Right. American companies can do amazing things if they are released from burdensome government regulations and red tape.
During WW II we needed cargo ships. American industry responded. By 1943 we were building three Liberty ships per day. Not per month. Per day.
America can do that sort of thing again, with any product.
