‘We’re definitely not prepared’: Africa braces for new virus

LUSAKA, Zambia -- At a Chinese-run hospital in Zambia, some employees watched as people who recently returned from China showed up with coughs but were not placed in isolation. A doctor tending to those patients has stopped coming to work, and health workers have been ordered not to speak publicly about the new virus that has killed hundreds around the world.

The virus that has spread through much of China has yet to be confirmed in Africa, but global health authorities are increasingly worried about the threat to the continent where an estimated 1 million Chinese now live, as some health workers on the ground warn they are not ready to handle an outbreak.

“The problem is, even if it’s mild, it can paralyze the whole community,” said Dr. Michel Yao, emergency operations manager in Africa for the World Health Organization.

Those growing worried include employees at the Sino-Zambia Friendship Hospital in the mining city of Kitwe in northern Zambia, near the Congo border. Chinese companies operate mines on the outskirts of the city of more than half a million people. One company is headquartered in Wuhan, the city at the center of the virus outbreak. Hundreds of workers traveled between Zambia and China in recent weeks.

“We’re definitely not prepared. If we had a couple of cases, it would spread very quickly,” physiotherapist Fundi Sinkala said. “We’re doing the best we can with what resources we have.”

Been wondering about this. Almost no cases reported in Africa. And yet the Chinese are all over the place there.

Population genetics is at the core of a given groups susceptibility to any pathogen and the extent of a pandemic. Have any of the genetic Westerners living and working in Wusan contracted or died of this particular coronavirus? Its simply not discussed or reported. Very politically incorrect to discuss genetic differences. Research scientists and epidemiologists lose their funding and jobs if they stray from the prevailing political narrative.

I read a report the climate of Africa, S/A and India is not favorable to the virus and they may get a free pass this time.

China wants to own Africa. Just sayin'...
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Apparently, a lot of viruses do not do well in warm and moist/high humidity areas.

“We’re definitely not prepared” should be Africa’s motto.

There are two basic issues that control lethality.
...........
1. Susceptibility, how available are certain people to this virus?
...........
2. Impairment, when people get sick, how good are their bodies at getting better?
...............
Everyone though, can get sick.
............
Although the sample size is very small for now, researchers have noticed that certain kinds of lung cells are “gateways” for the virus.
...........
Those small minority (about 3%) of lung cells are 3-4 times more prevalent in Asian males than they are in Asian females or male/female whites and blacks. There may be a linkage to blood pressure meds also.
...........
Pack those Asian males together, with some of them being very mobile, bingo, epidemic and possible pandemic.
............
Impairment of self-healing is an issue. Smoking doesn’t appear to be a major factor. Age is, and heart/lung background problems are present in nearly all deaths.
..............
The virus is easily killed outside the host, particularly by air temperature or antiseptic chemicals. Summer is coming. Fumigation is happening.
................
Once the available population is either healed or dead, the virus will disappear. Although it is showing a remarkable ability to mutate.

I doubt it. The virus survives 100% humidity and 98.6 deg temperatures in the human respiratory tree. May not survive as long on inanimate surfaces, but that won’t stop aerosol spread which is the primary method.

No kidding. The "Oppressed and colonialized" excuse carries on to this day.

As Chuck Yeager said, "At the moment of truth, there are either reasons or results."
