Opinion: Coronavirus: what Xi fears most is Chinese turning on the Communist Party
The South China Morning Post ^ | February 8, 2020 | by Wang Xiangwei

Back on January 21 last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping told a gathering of senior officials that they must be on guard against “black swans” and “grey rhinos” which could threaten the rule of the Communist Party amid a slowing economy.

One year later, Xi’s wildlife metaphors about the dangers facing the country have proved prophetic on a more literal level.

Scientists and medical experts have pinned down bats as the probable source of the coronavirus outbreak originating from a wet market which has stalls for trading wildlife animals in Wuhan of Hubei province.

The country’s current public health crisis could threaten the party’s rule and erode the people’s trust in the authoritarian centralised system which the Chinese leaders have been plugging as the be all and end all for building up the country into the second-largest economy in the world.

It is not hard to imagine that when the outbreak is contained, the Chinese leadership will again hail the wisdom of the authoritarian model as the key to mobilising national resources to defeat the “devil” virus. Local officials in Hubei would take the blame and be punished for their slow response to the outbreak and failure to implement measures by the central government in Beijing. Just like what happened in the aftermath of the Sars outbreak more than 17 years ago.

But this time round, restoring people’s trust and confidence in the party’s “system and capacity for governance” will be a lot harder.

I see your alternative suggestion. But consider this one...maybe that's what they were trying for but it bit *them* on the ass.

Remember, Chinese are good at reverse engineering, but they do not do indpendent thought very well.

29% of patients are infected staff

29% — that’s the % of the 138 #coronavirus infected patients who are actually infected medical staff in one Wuhan hospital. Almost 1 in 3 patients being hospital healthcare workers is just insane. New case series report in JAMA: https://t.co/j7HPV8j8dp pic.twitter.com/3Hmu3MaE7m

True, but one can hope that a population that has had glimpses of freedom in their TV, computer and cell phone screens might have/demand a better outcome.

Communism has to manage “supply and demand” by periodically reducing demand, terminally if necessary.

sheer numbers can overwhelm the most disciplined of military troops.

In the long run, human wave attacks weren't all that successful in Korea.

If there was ever an over throw of the communist party, because of the Coronavirus, it probably would happen after many of their police force individuals die off from the Coronavirus attempting to keep people quarantined, keeping them inside, and, rounding up those they suspect have the virus, at one point many of the loyal communist police force are going to abandon their posts if they feel if they stay at their posts it may be a death sentence to them. Kind of catch 22 stay, do your job, eventually catch the deadly virus and die or you jump ship and go AWOL and take the risk of getting away with it. The big problem with that scenario is if the Communist party survived more likely they would hunt you down, find you, and execute you and not only execute you but would execute your whole family for it, what is a man to do.

China releases a virus, although bad, has a manageable mortality rate, rest of the world works to suppress spread, but China inoculated by wide distribution. Wait a few months, release a second virus that is much more lethal, but that infection to first virus confers immunity, distribute widely. Horror and mayhem everywhere else, but not (immune) China...

The question is why would they do that?

At the present time China needs the rest of the world healthy to buy their crap and to steal their advanced ideas.

Next, we are already looking at the virus to see if it was a man made biological weapon. If so, and their is a second wave of this virus more deadly then the first some would considered that an act of war using weapons of mass destruction.

The United States have been clear on this for many years. Deploy weapons of mass destruction against the US and we will go nuclear!

Last point, the World Health Organization was caught sleeping with this virus. They were slow to react (and many nations are still slow to react).

If another wave of this virus begins again I suspect the response will be much quicker. The border with China will close. No airlines, no ships, no transports. China’s economy would go down the toilet.

So while I agree that the Chinese were messing with biological weapons, I don’t agree it was let lose on purpose.

At least that is my opinion on the subject based on no facts what so ever.

Yep, I have only vague concerns and conjectures. I used to live about 5 mi. From the CDC in Atlanta, and met a few very serious minded individuals.

[Because most of the people who are contracting the decease and dying from it are men, you can work this conspiracy theory; the Chinese government thinks they have too many adult males because of their one child policy. So they invented a virus that attacks unhealthy people and men 50% more often than women. This will cull the herd of men, bring the population in line. And since men are more likely to participate in violent protests, the government reduces that threat as well.]

800 out the past 2200 years were ruled by 3 dynasties established by peasant rebels. Until maybe 300 years ago, this had no parallel in the West. Spartacus never came close to becoming a Roman consul, and he lost, badly. In China, it happened first in 202 BC, 130 years before Spartacus embarked on his abortive revolt. The previous ruling clan was exterminated, with a body count in the hundreds of thousands. No Chinese government is gonna be doing anything to kill off China’s males - they have a history of eliminating their rulers so thoroughly from the gene pool that it’s as if that bloodline had never existed. A profile of China’s first successful peasant rebel turned emperor.

Chinese look at other races as subhuman. Maybe that want a Earth with nothing but Chinese who control everything.

I remember a scene in a WC Fields movie.

He lands a biplane in China and asks “Where am I?”.

“Wuhei”

“Well, woohoo to you too.”

There’s a scientist who is quite certain this new coronavirus is engineered, due to a protein from SARS being found in this strain which is nearly impossible to have occurred naturally. The Chinese also have a patent on using this protein to put into viruses.

His name is James Lyons-Weiler

The purpose of this escaped new virus then would be as a bioweapon, or as he believes more likely, attempts to create a SARS vaccine.
