David Abel’s 50th wedding anniversary luxury cruise began with him eating his fill and enjoying the sights of East Asia.
It’s ending with him quarantined in his cabin aboard the Diamond Princess for two extra weeks, eating a “lettuce sandwich with some chicken inside” and watching 20 infected people escorted off the ship, heading for hospitals for treatment of a new virus.
Abel is among hundreds of passengers on two cruise ships — in Japan and Hong Kong — caught in the drama and fear about the little-understood virus that just emerged in December....

It started out a three hour tour . . a three hour tour.
It seems like such a strange way to handle things.
Keep the hundreds on board. Once somebody shows symptoms THEN take them off...
Seems like they are trying to make sure every passenger gets it!

How about just the opposite?!
These trapped folks have had to breathe the infected air, touch infected surfaces and now they have the chance of contracting, as well.
What a nightmare mess.
It isn’t a prison ship.
These people have committed no crime.
They are under quarantine, and the cause is evident.
As of 15:43 PST yesterday, Japan had 22 cases. Right now 20:57 PST it has 86 right.
I expect more on that ship.
That’s what passengers are calling it.
They certainly aren’t free to leave.
I expect a LOT more confirmed cases, from this ship. It’s a confined infection laboratory.
The passengers can call it anything they like.
This is a public health situation.
I really dislike the use of inappropriate terms. This isn’t solely about the passengers.
In about 30 hours, Japan’s number of cases has jumped 2 short of 300%.
If I was on that ship, this is exactly what I’d expect them to do.
So they are isolated from other passengers, and the infected are being moved off ship.
Maybe you can join their private Facebook group and let them know that.

I just do not see easy answers here.
Moving hundreds of possibly infected people causes it’s own risks.
I’m not going to challenge them. They have a right to call whatever they like, but it is unfortunate to call it a prison, when they are benefiting from being screened.
If they’re infected, they’ll be moved off ship to a medical facility.
No worries.
Sad situation on these ships, and now, in the newly designated China Quarantine Camps.
The ships situation is so tricky....and, I’m NOT blaming the cruise line, or Japan, for how it’s being handled....this is likely the best way, of all options.
Just has to be so scary being trapped (until quarantine is over, or, God forbid one gets sick) on a ship....for weeks...waiting....wondering....if you’ll be next to contract.

I was wondering when vids from the rescue aircraft would surface.
I’m thinking we want the chicoms to know that we know.
That aircraft situation is dicey isn’t it.
You can’t separate the people there.
I totally agree with the idea the situation sucks.
Yes, it is sad.
The worst part of it can be in your head.
If you can get your devices and keep yourself busy, it will help.
If you can’t and you semi-panic, it will be very tough on you.
It’s what the flight attendants are wearing...
It’s just like the flu, right?
