Defense Secretary Mark Esper has instructed the Pentagon to ready military housing for 1,000 people as it prepares to quarantine those who may have the new coronavirus.
"Earlier today, we have learned that Defense Secretary Mark Esper approved a request from the Department of Health and Human Services to provide DOD housing support for up to 1,000 people who may need to be quarantined as they travel back to the United States and may have been in places where they could've been exposed to the coronavirus," said CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr.
The news comes after Massachusetts confirmed the eighth U.S. case of the coronavirus, which has killed more than 250 and infected more than 1,000 people in China.
"It's a stark, sudden reminder of just how much this public health situation is really expanding its impact," added Starr.
This week, 195 Americans were put under quarantine after returning on a State Department-chartered plane that brought the passengers home from Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus.
Shouldn’t these people be distributed across the United States?
The Obama Method?
Good.
Be proactive.
The numbers here are gonna grow.
The mortality rate is the big factor here.
I am sure they will get better treatment that China can offer.
Let’s see if it makes a difference.
I now know China makes our antibiotics. 80 percent of them.
Making them to deliver and having the infrastructure to get them to every village and town in amounts large enough is another story.
Really bad but probably necessary. The sickness incubates for two weeks without distinguishing symptoms
are they going to be quarantined from each other?
I can think of some areas north of Fort Bliss main post that would be perfect for this kind of thing. Isolated, easy to get to, plenty of ready logistical support within a relatively short distance (to include an international airport and a military airfield that can handle C17s), and even a brand new hospital opening in September (three years late and more than $600M over budget in true DOD fashion).
HR 645
I believe the site is Fort Carson, in Colorado Springs.
and even a brand new hospital opening in September (three years late and more than $600M over budget in true DOD fashion)....
...
What kind of hospital? 600M over budget is insane. What was the budget?
I would think there are a couple of ready-made facilities already in place after the Ebola scare.
I don't know--a huge one. I drove by it every day for two years while still under construction, and it is massive.
600M over budget is insane. What was the budget?
Yes, it is. I work in the new USSTRATCOM headquarters building at Offutt AFB, and it was also years over schedule and $100s of millions over budget. That was after they chopped off an entire floor, shrunk the individual workspaces, and cut out entire parking lots in pointless attempts to rein in the budget. DOD waste in these construction projects is beyond horrendous. Most folks have no clue of the profligacy in DOD, especially in these facilities projects.
According to this article, the original cost of the new William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss was $730M or so. So the DOD has paid for it twice essentially.
I think as of 5 PM tomorrow there will be seven airports (Honolulu, Atlanta, NYC, LA, Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco) accepting inbound flights from China. Passengers whove been in Wuhan go directly to enforced quarantine. Arrangements must have already been made in each of these cities for these quarantined people. One would think as the virus spreads, forced quarantine measures will generally fall to local health departments. Thats what I got from yesterdays task force press conference.
Im old enough to remember when the health department would quarantine a household (measles, whooping cough and such). I remember seeing quarantine notices on the front door of homes.
Not 80% of finished antibiotic products but possibly that fraction of critical ingredients. Almost as bad.
Wow.
The thing is people who didn’t show symptom were travelling here for a while I guess.
But then I guess there would be more ill people
We must have a stockpile somewhere, no?
I wonder what the shelf life is.
Oh, most of the ingredients could be sourced from other places in the world but it would be a slow, labored process with all the regulatory approvals and set up required. Almost worse than rare earths were in terms of sole sourcing.
Oh boy.
Obama would have turned them loose on the street immediately.
“are they going to be quarantined from each other?”
Excellent question. And how many of them might be coming here illegally to get away from the illness? Will the health organizations allow them to be shipped back without boarding them thus having to provide them with VISA’s that many just skip out into the country and disappear after they are medically cleared? Another illegal entry loophole.
