Meanwhile last year flu killed over 20,000 Americans - don’t know about the rest of the world.
47 of 49 associated with market. Only 2 visited and the rest worked there.
If these wet markets are commonplace in China then you’d think the majority of people would patronize them given they are cheaper than a typical grocery store there.
The 47 number of affected that actually worked there is something to ponder outside of the accidental release from the lab question.
Considering the air and water quality in China which has for years already affected most of China’s city peoples it’s not surprising they would be acceptable to any resperatory virus or illness.
This settles it, Im not drinking anymore Corona.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Lung assault All of the 99 patients taken to the hospital had pneumonia...
...
I wonder if the pneumonia was due to secondary bacterial infections.
Except for the referenced “confusion” those symptoms were fairly common during our flu season. Short of some sort of testing, I’m confused as to how it is diagnosed. Flu or coronavirus?

Just a side comment to my other post:
I find it amazing that these doctors, who are probably working 20 hours per day, are able to find the time to write a technical medical paper on what’s going on. There has been a series of such papers from China. It is really good that they are able to produce these to share information with the medical community around the world. It’s still amazing how the Internet allows such knowledge to be instantly communicated and shared worldwide. Not long ago, a paper would have been prepared as a manuscript, peer-reviewed, and showed up in a printed journal months later.
I’m not a medical professional, but I did write a lot of technical papers in my career, and I know how much work goes into a preparing a paper. These Chinese papers are all well structured, well written, in very good English and seem technically sound. They are understandable by lay people.
17 (17%) patients developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and, among them, 11 (11%) patients worsened in a short period of time and died of multiple organ failure.Wow, 11% worsened quickly and died of multiple organ failure. That's obviously not good.
10% dead.
57% still in hospital beds.
This will overwhelm any medical system anywhere.
The only unanswered question is the transmission rate, for which I’ve seen informed (medical) speculation that each infected person will likely spread to 3 others. Anyone have better info on that?
If all of the above turn out to be correct, we will either generate a vaccine in time, or experience something unworldy.
