Dr. Inglesby is the Director of the Center for Health Security of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Center for Health Security is dedicated to protecting people’s health from the consequences of epidemics and disasters. Dr. Inglesby is also a Professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with a Joint Appointment in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Dr. Inglesby completed his internal medicine and infectious diseases training at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he also served as Assistant Chief of Service in 1996-97. Dr. Inglesby received his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and his BA from Georgetown University. He sees patients in a weekly infectious disease clinic.
Transportation makes today’s society possible. If planes, container ships, etc. shut down it’s going to be a rough ride besides the direct impact of the virus.

Hopefully with a pandemic the virus will become attenuated through the multiple passages. However, it is possible for the virus to become more virulent and thus a nightmare scenario.
This can be as deadly for America as the Swine Flu.
I thought this planning/approach was adopted when we had the Bird Flu Virus, SARS, AIDS/HIV, Ebola, etc. It is a good approach but if it hasn’t been implemented to some degree (re elements of it), why not by NOW?
Scientists are not stupid, esp. medical scientists (for the most part). They see things that they know CAN BE extremely dangerous to deadly and say so. If the WHO is not listening, the CDC is not listening, the NIH is not listening, the European Union is not listening, and continental health organizations for Latin America, Africa, Asia/China, and the Island nations, then what has gone wrong?
Are all the right people talking to each other, esp. in this day and age of great medical communications systems? If not, why not? If so, then why would this plan have to be written again?

I’d like some FR medical people to comment on this article/proposal as to whether it already exists as real plans, is a good prototype for something new, and why it hasn’t been fully implemented if it already exists as a viable plan.
I learn more from FR commenters than I do from newspapers, and really appreciate it as I’m both a heart attack & cardiac arrest survivor, plus a pancreatic cancer survivor so far. I like to know what is new in the medical field (which is why I save FR posted articles on various health subjects), as well as personal stories that might be of use to me and others I know who are suffering from different diseases and conditions.

If the mortality rates are accurate, we have no more to fear from this than from the seasonal flu.
Too many folks are panicking, and this tweet-based info seems to follow that model.
These videos cropping up are interesting, but I think folks get excited from seeing them and panic.
Get your home situated with water and food.
If you have to, stay in the home and sit it out.
That’s not easy for people who have to work. I realize that, but the kids can stay home. Maybe a parent can.
We’ll get through this.
When all is said and done, we will probably look back and smile at how fearful we were.
We’ve had so many of these situations over the last 5-7 years, and none of them panned out to be the pandemic folks thought they would be at the outset.

Global plan for mass manufacturing of vaccine when it is created. This should be planned for multiple places in the world concomitantly. Cannot have a successful vaccine come out of only one place and remain only in that country. It will need to be broadly distribut

Monstrous numbers of deaths and disabilities will take much more of a toll on the economy than banning flights and closing borders. When the virus arrives, employees will not be at their jobs. Schools will be empty. Transportation will halt.
Even in this set of tweets, and likely the big fix is simply give them all lots of money, unlimited money. Scare everyone to ensure it is given. A royal scam.
