A Note on Coronavirus: Don't Panic
American Thinker.com ^ | January 26, 2020 | Mike Konrad

I am not suggesting that we not remain alert, nor am I suggesting that we cast caution to the winds, but this present coronavirus will probably be nowhere near as deadly as many Chicken Littles are predicting.

Why?

Because, quite often, it is not the virus itself, but the secondary infections that are so deadly.

The majority of deaths during the influenza pandemic of 1918–1919 were not caused by the influenza virus acting alone, report researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health. Instead, most victims succumbed to bacterial pneumonia following influenza virus infection. The pneumonia was caused when bacteria that normally inhabit the nose and throat invaded the lungs along a pathway created when the virus destroyed the cells that line the bronchial tubes and lungs.

Did you catch that? It was bacteria, piggybacking on top of viral damage, that caused the fatalities.

However, unlike 1918, today, medicine has an arsenal of antibiotics available to fight such bacteria — antibiotics that were not available in 1918. And yes, some bacteria have developed resistance, but not all. In plain terms, medicine has a better fighting chance.

In many cases, a course of antibiotics and acetaminophen (Tylenol) to control the fever might prove sufficient. However, there will be worse cases.

The 1918 flu also caused a cytokine storm, where the body's immune system over-reacted.

There is an excellent article available and current as of today (1/26/20) describing the virus in rational terms. Highly recommend reading it at livescience.com. Just my $.02.

We simply don’t know what will happen if the disease gets out of China. All we can do is wait and see.
Therefore, our attitude should be, that we will take all measures as if it IS going to become a pandemic.
We’ll suffer a little inconvenience if it fizzles out; but if not, then an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Well I’m not that worried but this new flu is mimicking the Spanish flu in that it is attacking young people in inordinate proportions. Only 12% of victims so far are seniors.

I will just point out.. Didn't stop my healthy young teenager in the family from succumbing to what I presume was the cytokine storm in less than 48 hours of being told she had the flu. Went into coma during medevac. Died from sepsis/pneumonia. So while Modern Medicine is great...it doesn't mean you cant die from the same thing that got people in 1918. So you can walk around like modern medicine will save you....or you can take precautions. I take the precautions and I take it seriously.

That’s the only kind I want!

Chinese people scare easily and believe folk tales and rumors more than we do, and friends who have lived there say their contact say may public places are empty, people afraid to come out. Trump should not let this crisis go to waste and halt incoming passenger travel, maybe quarantine all freight from China to conduct scans - this has the potential to upset their economy more than the tariffs has. I don’t make any bones about the fact that Xi needs to be crushed. He is not our friend, he is the public face of the CCP and has many bosses to answer to who will not tolerate continued failure. “America First” does not mean “China First”.

I’m not panicking myself.

The problem are the chowder-heads with little to do but d*ck around online looking to try to freak other people out because they arent fans on context, but just want to hear themselves talk.

***Did you catch that? It was bacteria, piggybacking on top of viral damage,***

I remember reading this during the Swine Flu panic of the 1970s. A doctor way back then said don’t panic, as we had anti-biotics to fight the pneumonia which is what really killed people back in 1918.

It is and I post it as a reminder that Modern Medicine is great...but you have to be realistic to it’s limitations.

There was no autopsy so we don’t have clues as to what really happened.

To go from waving during medivac to coma and dead was just stunning to everyone since we were told she had the flu. She didn’t let go until all the family members got there to say goodbye. Some had to drive several hours to get there. Coincidence or not..that is what I believe.

So live your life...but take precautions..especially during flu season.

Rut-roh! Didn't California recently consider declaring acetaminophen a carcinogen?

A doctor way back then said don’t panic, as we had anti-biotics to fight the pneumonia which is what really killed people back in 1918.

They have plenty of anti-biotics in China, and skilled doctors in urban areas like Wuhan. So we will get to see how effective anti-biotics and modern medical care are against this novel Coronavirus.

Don't panic, prepare!

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

I remember the ridiculous Swine flu panic. It was during the time when the peanut farmer from Georgia was in the People’s House.
