The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is resetting its Doomsday Clock, which has stood still since 2018 at two minutes to midnight. I was a member of the Bulletins Board of Sponsors for a dozen years and chaired it from 2009 through 2018, and I think its time to retire the clock....
Psychologist Steven Pinker arguesand the bulletin admitsthat the clock is anything but a scientific instrument. In Mr. Pinkers view, the annual announcement is a publicity stunt that demeans the scientific community and makes the world seem more dangerous than it actually is.
The clock is a publicity stuntand a successful one. That was the point. The public hardly ever debates the ever-present danger of a world with 10,000 nuclear weapons. People would rather not think about it...

Who is making money off the Clock?
And what precisely is the counterargument?
Uhm. No it didn't.
People "moved" it.
Also this lame excuse for a Phd doesn't even know the difference between "and" and "or".
And just what’s so awful about Midnight anyways?
The Clock struck 12?...Oooo scary!!
Now when it sticks 13, then I’ll start to worry.
I think the folks who run the nuclear clock, set the clock forward early.
They sprang forward about an hour.
lol
As a statistician who once worked extensively with the scientific community, I think this clock is not what should be worrying scientists. Their own conduct, politicizing research, is what demeans the community.
Anyone who takes this seriously is a moron.
The “My Work is Done Here” meme is hilarious. Do you know where the background pic came from?
Eddie Lives!
I for one just don’t give a damn.
I probably have 10 or 12 clocks in this house, if even one of them shows the correct time I would be amazed.
It’s day time when I can see my dogs outside in the morning, it’s night time when I can’t see them.
It’s time to get to work when I have had my morning coffee, it’s time to stop when I am afraid I will run over one of those dumb muts in the dark with the tractor.
GOD will bring doomsday when he is damn good and ready, not according to some assholes clock.
;)
No. Just saw it on FR a few years ago and added it to the archive.
It totally and accurately represents the Obama administration. This guy was so obvious it’s painful.
Good one...
